Something Going Around? - Coppell,TX

My 2 yo daughter came home from Gymboree today and seemed fine until she started to eat lunch. She told me her tummy didn't feel well, but I thought she might just be hungry. She started to eat and then projectile vomited clear fluid and cheese. I was thinking it might just be that she took her vitamin just before class and it was giving her tummy issues. Then she started running a low grade fever (99.5) after an hour.

Has anyone else had these symptoms? With all the stuff that is going around, is this something I should rush her to the dr for. She was playing most of the evening like normal, but then got a little bit more lethargic before bed time.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your responses. It must have just been a 24 hour bug. She ran a fever overnight and through the next day but was eating well. She is fine now, back to her normal funny little self. :)

Haven't seen that in my part of the world yet but it doesn't mean something's not going around.

I'd clean her up and put her to bed and check in on her a couple of times overnight. Best to let her rest and get some sleep if she can sleep. Make sure breathing sounds good and look at her color, make sure lips are nice and pink (not blue) and she's not breathing fast or labored. If yes, that's an ambulance call.

Tomorrow when you get her up, check her temp, if it's high (like over 101) then give her some tylenol or motrin to try to get her comfortable so she can eat/drink. Keep watching the breathing, if you are unable to keep fluids down I'd definitely call for a Dr. appointment. She doesn't need to drink a lot, especially with an upset tummy but she needs a little bit ever so often. Pedialyte pops are good and they go down slow so as not to upset the tummy more.

You need to see at least 1-2 good pee diapers every 8 hours. Make sure eyes are nice and wet and not sunken in. If she starts to look dry or isn't peeing, that needs a Dr visit during normal hours or an urgent care visit during the night/weekend hours.

Fever is good, it's cooking the germs. But if it goes over 101 and you can't budge it with Tylenol or Motrin so she can eat/drink, you need to try to see the Dr. as well.

I usually try to manage this stuff at home because I don't want to pick up some other crud beyond what my kid already has...BUT I have a 3 day limit. If at day 3 she's not better (like if she's still running a fever) then I take her just to make sure we are on the right track.

Hope this helps, good luck and hope she gets well soon!

I am a substitute teacher and this week at the school where I sub, a stomach bug was going around in the lower grades.

Another thought could be swine flu. My daughter had it a couple weeks ago. Vomiting is associated with the swine flu and a high fever hit daughter fast.

Our pedi does not give Tamiflu for the swine. There is a shortage of it and it is saved for children who do have underlying issues. I was ok with that because my daughter is rarely sick and has never taken mane Rx drugs in her 14 yrs.

I would watch her carefully and monitor fever. If you get a fever spike, I'd certainly ask my pedi as he/she might want to test her for the flu.

Hope she is better fast!

Swine flu can cause vomitting and diarrhea. There are also numerous stomach viruses that are going around - we had the vomitting bug a couple weeks back - same symptoms low grade fever, vomitting and just feeling listless- it lasted about 36 hours.

I would give clear liquids as she tolerates them and watch her. Obviously if her fever spikes or she has trouble breathing at any point - then seek medical attention. Taking her to the doctor could expose her to a multitude of other illnesses! Also they are limiting who qualifies to get Tamiflu these days... only high risk groups qualify! My son has swine flu - but b/c he has no hx of asthma - they did not give him tamiflu!

Personally I would call the doctor, with all of the flu/swine flu going around I would not risk it. If she does have the flu you need to get TamiFlu in her within the first 48 hours for it to be effective. I would not take the risk and get her to the doctor or at least call them.
