My mom is visiting and just started feeding my 5 month old solids..peas and pears..he loves them but I am worried she may be overfeeding him. She gave him 3 small jars in one day...does that seem excessive?

What can I do next?

It does seem excessive... and expensive. My doctor told me that until they are 6 months old, babies don't really need to eat solid foods, other then maybe some baby cereal. I fed my baby cereal once a day from 5 months to 6 months. Then at 6 months I gradually introduced other foods. Now he is 7 months old and eating solids 3 times a day. Another concern I would have is introducing too many foods at once. My doctor told me that it is important to introduce only one food at a time and wait a week to introduce the next. That way, you can pinpoint any allergies and make sure that your baby is digesting it well.

He should still be getting most of his nutrition from formula or breast milk until close to the 1 year mark. Three jars sounds a little much for a 5 mos old.
I would say it is great he loves it, what I did when my kids started solids was do cereal (rice or oatmeal) mixed with formula for breakfast but a bottle first, then lunch I gave some peas mixed in with thin cereal and maybe a little fruit and it was AFTER a bottle and then at dinner another veggie with mixed in cereal and that was after a bottle first. Some days we skipped lunch with solids until my kids were like 7 mos. old then I made sure they have three meals a day so to speak with baby food.
I would think as long as he is eating it, she or you give a bottle first before offering solids and he is taking in what he needs during the day from the bottle or breast then that is fine.

if he's doing ok, it doesn't mean you have to do it, but it's probably alright. she's just visiting, right?

he probably won't eat more than he can handle, and if he does, he'll spit it up. just make sure he is hydrated.

It all depends on him. Does he seem to still nurse or drink enough formula? My son had and still has a HUGE appetite. Breastmilk or formula still needs to be a huge part of their diet, that would be the only concern. He also could be going through a growth spurt in which he will require more food for a while and then it may taper off.

My kids were eating a jar for breakfast, one for lunch, and then one for dinner by the time they were 5 months. Or else they would eat like an ounce of formula mixed with cereal for breakfast and then for lunch an ounce of formula mixed with a veggie for lunch and dinner. If he has never even had cereal I would slow down a bit tho. My children always started eating solids early as milk never seemed enough for them. My two boys started on doc recommendation at like 2 months real thin cereal. If he is not getting an upset stomach I would continue the food but keep it slow and only try one new food a week is what I was always told to check for allergies. GL

Hi E.!
I think it depends on what else he ate during the day. If he was nursing or took as many bottles as normal, then it might be high. If your mom only gave him baby food and no formula, then it would be just about right. Overall, it depends on whether or not he received any other food during that time period. He may also be growing and need to eat more. He will stop eating when he is full, until then I wouldn't worry about it! Hope this helps!

Yes - as others mentioned at this age it is just an intro - they don't really get any nutrition or substanance from it. But the best advise - call your pediatrician and ask them - they are your best judge and phone help is usually free - plus, it may be a more comfortable conversation with your mom if you say " well I wanted to just double check about diet and called the pediatrician and they recommend...."

Good luck!!!! (ps - my daugther was eating 1 stage 1 jar of food/day - at that age as an intro - we only did one kind of food every 3 days - to make sure there were no allergies - something your doctor and "all" the baby books will recommend)

HI E.,
When introducing baby food to your baby it should be just that, introducing. You should start with one food, say peas, and give them that for 3 to 5 days just to make sure there are no allergic reactions, then introduce a second food, the pears and so on. Since your baby is so young I would start off with one jar aday at dinner time. Sit his high chair near the table and feed him "dinner" when everyone else eats too so he can feel like he's part of the family meal. After he eats the baby food offer him a bottle or nurse him until he's full. I would stick to this routine for a few weeks to months unless your baby is hungry alot. Once my baby started drinking 6oz bottles more often than 2hrs apart that's when I started giving her "breakfast" and "lunch" jars too. But your baby definitly still needs his bottle for his nutrition so don't take them away, always offer them after his baby food feedings too. And just so you know, your baby's poop will resemble the food he's eaten. Orange carrots = orange poop LOL! Remember to use bibs too, sometimes the baby food stains don't wash out so well! Good luck and have fun with it!

kinda. And if he hasn't had solids until now I would take it slowly. Like one jar a day for a while. Than increase slowly. But I don't really know too much about baby food. My daughter hated all of it so she only nursed until she was old enough to start table foods. but again I would just do one to two jars a day for now.
