My 6 year old is starting softball next week. This will be her first time playing and she will be in the 6-8 year old division where they pitch and not hit off of a tee. I am having trouble figuring out what size bat to buy her. Anyone with kiddos that young in softball know? She is 47 inches tall. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I have boys in baseball, and if I remember correctly, to get the proper length measure the length from the hip down, and that should give you the correct measurement for a bat. It may be different for girls, I don't know for sure, but someone at a sporting good store should be able to help you pick one out correctly as well. Is it mandatory for all players to have their own bat? Sometimes coaches have several for use, if that's the case, have her try out a few and see which suits her best, the coach should also be able to help to :) Have Fun and Good Luck!

Check with the coach, or the director of the league :)

Look on the bats and find the place it says the size. It often will say for up to XX inches or something similar. It should be her size, compared to her arms length, how heavy she likes it, I like a solid heavy bat, others prefer a lightweight metal bat, it is something individual.

Why not wait until practice and see what kinds of bats the coach brings. We always had about 5-7 to choose from. But of course we had to buy the pink bat anyway.

This is the second year my daughter is in softball, also 8U and my husband is the manager ths year. His suggestion (since I don't really pay attention to that stuff) is to by the smallest one you can find, probably 26 inches and 16 oz. Shop around since the prices can range quite a bit ($40-$300).

Good luck to your daughter, mine had a great time.

you need to go to a softball batting cage facility where she can try some out. NOT on the machines. But they usually have a shop and instructors that will help her with length and weight. After you buy a bat (remember they are pricy) do not under any circumstances let her use it on a pitching machine. It WILL ruin the bat. You can take the specs of the bat and go to play it again, a thrift store, or walmart to buy a cheapo, junky bat for the cages/machine. When she outgrows the good bat, if it is still in good condition you can pass it on to someone you know and maybe get a few bucks back or donate it.

FYI my 6 year old has played 2 years and used a 12oz/24". she will probably outgrow it by next season and will pass it on to her sis who will be starting next season when she is 4. At this age do not get suped into buying too expensive of a bat because it will be something she will need to replace every few years for a while. You can also wait to see what the league will provide. they will provide some. NOt the newest models. But if you don;t think she will play for years and years you may want to wait a few weeks.

Hi A. - My daughter started at that age as well, it's a blast. I had no idea what size so between the coach and the sporting goods store we were able to select the proper size. Can you hold off until next week?
