My husband loves his. He makes his own flavored water for work. We have fewer bottles to recycle since he reuses the bottles everyday. Yes the soda stream bottles are expensive but he has been using the same ones for a year.

As a treat or for guests, we use the regular, not diet syrups. Not often but it is fun for the kids when they have friends over. So much better than all the high fructose corn syrup in name brand soda.

We have one. We don't use the syrups. There were some that came with the machine when we bought it and they were OK. Mostly diet which means artificial sweeteners which we don't like.
But, we use it all the time to make carbonated flavored water. We buy lemon or lime juice and put some of that in the water. My husband has also carbonated unsweetened tea and even went so far as to do it to his coffee. He loved it!
My husband is addicted to the bubbles but doesn't want to drink soda. The kids will drink a lot more water if it has bubbles in it too.
It's super easy to use. We've already had to get new tanks for it and it was super easy to do it through their website. We bought one from Costco which takes a larger tank so it lasts longer.
It was absolutely worth the money for us.

Have one and love it! As one poster said the co2 runs like 25$ but if you take your empty bottle to Macy's or bed bath and beyond you get a discount on a new one, I only pay 12$. Also they do make all natural syrups

The syrups are terrible, but I like the little bottles of unsweetened essence flavors (raspberry, orange, and lemon-lime) and I really enjoy just sparkling water. It works for me because I don't really drink sweetened sodas at all -- I make 2-3 bottles a day. Love it.

ETA: You can also exchange the cartridges at Staples -- they last pretty long -- and you can mix carbonated water with juice for some very healthy, yummy drinks.

I looked into this and was not sure it really saves money. The CO2 is EXPENSIVE and the sodas I had, flavors were not super great. My BIL has it. they won it at a party. You still need to store CO2 and syrup. If you are out of CO2 you have to pay to have it shipped or go to select stores that have it. I wanted to get it for my husband but I passed.

My husband has it and loves it, but he is not a soda drinker, he uses it to make carbonated water, which he mixes with juice and sometimes vodka.
Since we only put water in it, and don't buy the soda/syrup stuff, it's totally worth it (the cost of crystal geyser/pelligrino sparkling water adds up!)
Besides, guys love gadgets.
Why don't you give it to him for Christmas? :-)

I have one that is collecting dust. It is fun while the gas is full but then it is such a hassle now to get the refill. I do miss my soda water tho...
