Okay, So I Receive a monthly social security check because my father is disabled. And My mother and I both want to save the checks in the bank for college. But I also want to learn responsibility and learn to balance my money and get a job. But she won't let me because she thinks it will cut off my Social security check. Is she correct?

yeah you can get a job. maybe they have the same guidelines as they do for me. i receive SS for myself being disabled, and can make 700/month gross income (before taxes). i used to work at target and was able to make 220/month. they won't take it away until you are 18. my son is gonna get SS through me when he's born and they won't take it away if he gets a job later on.

Hmmmm... let's see.... get a job and earn your own money like a responsible citizen, or let the government hand you a check you didn't earn (paid by Americans who have jobs and pay taxes.) Which makes more sense to you? I guess I just don't understand why YOU would be getting a check for your father's disability.

I'm sorry your father is disabled. The way it worked when I was a minor was the first year (too young to work) and the last year (year I turned 18), I couldn't make more than a certain amount, for the whole year. I would call the SS office and ask them, to be sure. If you exceed the limit, then you might end up having to pay SS back. You don't want to do that. Matter of fact, I ended up having to quit two jobs so I didn't exceed the limit. I don't understand why that rule is in place, but that's why we call it government.
Good luck....and happy job hunting! :)

You don't say how old you are, but I was in a similar situation because my father was also disabled. I was able to work, and don't believe there was a limit to how much I could make. This was many years ago, so if I were you I would check with Social Security.

Good for you for wanting to take care of yourself! They are not going to cut out your father's SS check because you work. Give them a call! Don't ever back down from becoming responsible and learning to manage your own money. Your mother should be proud of you instead of trying to stop you.

I don't think your mother is correct. Call SS.

Social security is bankrupt and it won't last long. They are borrowing from the left hand to pay the right.

Get a job, if you can.

The best answer is directly from the horse's mouth. Call the social security administration office 1-800-772-1213. I know that someone who receives disability can work, but can only make so much per month before the amount of the disability check is adjusted. Since you aren't the one that's disabled, this is a different scenario that needs to be checked out through the social security administration.

i believe that you are able to work if you are recieving a check if one of your parents are disabled. but just to be on the safe side check with the social security administration just to be on the safe side. now if the check is for you because you are disabled i know for a fact that you arent' supposed to work. good luck
