I was wondering if anyone has tried soap nuts as an alternative to laundry soap. Any recommendations on brands?

What can I do next?

I love the soap nuts! I've used Maggie's and use them always on my sheets and towels...sometimes on other loads also, but primarily on towels because we've had a problem with stinky (moldy) towels. I highly recommend them.

We use them too and really like them. I don't know what brand they are (I will try to check when I am downstairs later) but I ordered them through an online buying cooperative called Crunchy Cooperative. A lot of people on there use them and like them. But it is a different for people who switch from scented detergents directly to soap nuts because soap nuts leave no smell on the dried clothes (the clothes do have a slight vinegar smell when they are still wet but it goes away once dried). Personally I gag on detergent perfumes and do not consider that to be a "clean laundry" smell. To me clean laundry smell is no smell.

One warning, we have a front loading washer and I put the little baggie of 3-4 soap nuts in the detergent drawer. But when I was out of town I forgot to tell my husband to pull it out and let it dry if he was going to not do laundry for a couple days (because the nuts will mold if left wet). I came home to a yucky mess and a stinky washer that smelled like moldy powerful vinegar. By switching back to my normal powdered unscented detergent for a week I was able to rectify the problem.

I have used Soap Nuts and they work well. I had no complaints about them getting the laundry clean. I didn't like that they didn't leave a nice "clean" scent, though. So, while I was happy, I was also disappointed that I didn't get the satisfaction of folding lovely smelling clothing.

I have not used that soap. I use either Gain or Tide, but that is each ones choice.

The other thing that I thought it was interesting to ask you, is about your piano lessons. would like to know where do you provide those lessons. more specific, where do you live. I am from Faribault. I would be interested in some classes for my daughter if you are from the area.

Gee, I got all excited that you were asking about Soap Nuts and I thought I'd hear all these rave reviews, but it seems they're unfortunately not as popular as I had hoped. I actually love them. It's fun to take one out of the pouch when you're about to replace them (I use mine for HEAVILY soiled poopy cloth diapers and they always come out clean!) and you squeeze it a little and tiny little suds come out. I'm always amazed at what Nature has supplied us with in order to make our lives easier....including laundry. We use Maggie's brand....I'm sure any brand works fine. It's not like one tree in the forest makes a "better brand" of nuts, you know? :)

I'm actually kind of glad they don't give off that nauseating perfumed smell that most detergents give you. We've gotten so used to naturally fresh clothes that when we get hand-me-downs from people, we wash them just to get the detergent smell OUT. I think soap nuts leave your clothes smelling like grass, which is especially nice when you pair it with a summertime hanging on the clothes line. With the diapers, I always pour about a tablespoon of white vinegar where the fabric softener would normally go, and then I sprinkle some baking soda directly on the diapers as the machine fills up with water. You just throw that same bag of soap nuts that you've already used for the previous 3 or so loads and you're done. It's SO easy! (Almost as easy as cloth diapering!) :)

Anyway, try them. You've got nothing to lose. I hope you enjoy them as much as we do. (And your local fish and wildlife will thank you!)

I don't use soap nuts but we do use Charlie's Soap and like it. We do cloth diapers with our child and like how it works on those as well as our clothes. Good luck.
