So Thirsty...

Okay, I'm 18 weeks pregnant and I have this horrible terrible thirst. It doesn't happen all the time, but maybe once or twice a week. I eat ice, drink tons of water, ginger ale, milk, so on and so forth. I'm wondering if anyone has an idea of what else I could possibly drink to help this thirst go away. I'm going to address it with my dr. next time I go, but any ideas?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I have a Dr. appt. next week. I'm sure that I'll have to do that nasty sugar water test. Thank you all for the advice! I'll let you know what happens!

I have a 3 month old at home and was thirsty throughout my pregancy the whole time. I actually craved ice. Would stop by McD's or BoJo's and just order large cups of ice if I was on the road......I had Gest Diab as well (controlled it with diet and pills) and as soon as I had my son (I was also induced early because of - which was good...cause had 9lb 11ozer 2 weeks early). Sugar levels got back to normal after delivery and no longer crave the ice....but Breastfeeding seems to keep me wanting water as well. So just stick to drinking what is good for you!!
Good Luck

I had this problem with my first pregnancy. I just accepted it as a craving and it eventually went away. What is worse is with my second pregnancy, I had to spit ALL the time. If I tried to swallow it, I would gag! YUCK!

I'm a few weeks ahead of you in my own pregnancy, due in June. I feel for you because I'm the same way. I have to have a drink in my hand at all times, the colder the better! I'm drinking over a quart of water during the night and a gallon of tea plus more water during the day. My midwife suggested this great pregnancy tea for me to drink and said I needed at least a quart a day, she was ecstatic when I told her I was drinking it by the gallon! You NEED all that fluid, your blood volume doubles during pregnancy as well as you're responsible for supplying enough fluid for the baby and flushing out everything for the both of you. While it won't hurt to get checked for Gestational Diabetes, you're probably doing the best thing possible by listening to your body and drinking as much as you want.

Just a stab in the dark, gestational diabetes...diabetes is always associated with that kind of thirst. the good thing if it's gestational is that you get over it once the baby is born as long as you take very good care of yourself. I'd go see the doc and tell her/him of your symptoms.
Be safe! T. K

Definitely drink lots of water and give your doctor a call if you're not going in soon. Extreme thirst can be a sign of gestational diabetes. Also, dehydration can put you into preterm labor. I ended up in the hospital at 30 weeks with them trying to stop my contractions and it was all becuase I was dehydrated.

Good luck.

A., if I were you I would call the doctor. I know it's a little early but thirst like that is sometimes a sign of gestational diabetes. (NOT to scare you!!) Or craving ice is sometimes a sign of anemia. Both of which you'd need to get checked out for. It wouldn't hurt to just call your nurse & ask.
Good luck!

Hi A.,
Congrats on your pregnancy! Always remember that hormones go crazy when you're pregnant and being thirsty all the time is probably nothing to worry about. Besides, drinking all that water is probably very good for you and your baby! Definitely talk to your doctor about it, but it's probably nothing to stress over. Take care.

Dear A.,

Yes, please call your doctor.....it could be gestational diabetes, not to scare you, you will be fine, and the baby will be too, but you need to be checked out.

My daughter-in-law had this while pregnant, everything went well, she just had to monitor what she eat.

Hope that helps! Let us know how you are or let me know.

Sending you many Blessings!!!! D.

Hi A. - I was also very thirsty all the time during my pregnancy and always had this cotton-mouth feeling that sort of made me feel like I had a bad taste in my mouth. Part of it for me I think was combined with being so HOT all the time. Anyway, I drank Powerade with lots of ice in it and that seemed to help... also lots of water of course - and no soda - that will make it worse. Maybe some really cold juice would help too. I liked to eat fruit like grapes and oranges that were juicy. I also chewed fruity flavored bubble gum to keep my mouth from getting so dry. But it sounds like from what the other people have said, you may want to get checked for gestational diabetes. Good luck, and congrats!

This same thing happend with me and my second pregnancy! I had no idea what it was, but I literally felt like screaming sometimes if I didn't have water. I just made sure I carried a bottle of water with me at all times. I had really bad morning sickness, latest up until I delivered I was on a pump and all kinds of fun things. I don't know if that is the case with you, maybe it was just dehydration. Good luck!

I'm sure your OB will check you for gestational diabetes when you tell him your concerns, in the meantime, put a few slices of cucumber and lemon in your water. Most people think of these as great ways to lose extra water, but they are also great thrist quenchers. You may want to drink gatorade, or something like that. When you drink too much water you lose those electolyes and that's when you start to have problems, or just make sure you have enough salt in your diet. We see this more and more as a salt conscious nation, people are not getting enough somtimes, just be careful with that one and use good judgement. Last, eat water containing fruits and vegetables, like melons (especially watermelon, cucumber, tomatoes, grapes, etc.
Good luck and I hope it's nothing more than just a side effect of pregnancy!

I would definatly contact your doctor. If I remember right, it is about time for them to do a glucose test on you anyway but they may want to do it sooner with you being so thirsty. It could be a sign of gestational diabetes, so it is important that you check with them as soon as possible. Even if you just talk to someone on the phone and get some advice from them. When I was pregnant with my youngest, all I wanted to drink was juice of some sort.

Hope this helps!

Be careful with dehydration, it sent my sister into early labor. You can also try Gatorade, it helps replace the electrolytes in your body. Call your Dr.'s office and tell the nurse your symptoms and see what he/she suggests. Congratulations on your soon to be!

Drink less soda, it tends to make you more thirsty at times. More water and ice, those are natural thirst quenchers, and hope that tides you over until the doctor has a look see. It may just be one of those cravings women get. Before you go looking into drinking so much, look up online what the safe limit is. There was a horrible story in the news about a woman who drank tooo much water and died. http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-water-poisoning.htm

There is a good link to look through.

NO SODA! LOL

I had that same thing. I was drinking over a gallon and one half of water a day. I asked my doctor too, he said it's a symptom of gestational diabetes. Make sure you get checked and rechecked. I thought that water is the only real thirst quencher. Just keep it up. MAke sure you ask your doctor how much is too much.
