Friends ,

Next week is our turn to bring in snacks for the preschool kids at my son's school , im thinking about bringing oranges + animal crackers ( is it ok if i pack the animal cracker in (100 calories bag ) or bring the original package to school ( i bought 4 packs of animal crackers (keebler brand ) . They have almost 30 students at the school ( how many oranges do i need to buy ) .....

Please advice ....

Your idea sounds great. Oranges and animal crackers are from 2 food groups, which is important at our preschool. I would suggest keeping the snack foods in the original packaging, including the oranges! Offer to peel/slice them before you leave, which might be very helpful to the teacher. But at most preschools it is required for all food to be "untouched" prior to arriving at the preschool. Hope this helps.

At my son's preschool they have large bags of whatever they're eating (crackers, cranberries, cheerios, etc.) and they put the snacks either on a napkin or in a little plastic cup for each kid. I'd just bring the large bag of crackers, and if they don't stock napkins there, just pick up some paper napkins. I would personally bring 15 oranges, 1/2 an orange for each kid.

My daughter's preschool has a strict policy. We have to keep everything in its original form and in its original packaging (and if it is produce we need to provide one fruit or veggie per child) and because it it partially state funded for some children we have to include food from two food groups plus milk or juice and cups. Snack time is pretty short (around 15 minutes) so the teachers appreciate if the snack is easy to prepare/hand out. Check and see if you can pre-slice the oranges and if you have to provide one orange per child or if they can share. I wouldn't pack the animal crackers in portions. Most preschools just can out cookies and crackers on napkins. It was our turn to bring a snack a few weeks ago. My daughter chose chocolate chip cookies, cheese sticks and juice boxes.

You need to check with your daughter's school. We can't bring in oranges unless they are peeled and sectioned. It takes the teachers too long to peel and section the oranges for the kids. At my daughter's school we're allowed to divvy up the stuff any way we see fit, including repackaging things. I know at some school you're not.

A HUGE hit at my daughter's school are Go Gurts and grapes. Or string cheese and some type of fruit.

You can just send in the big packages - no need to use excess amount of plastic baggies!
Oranges - cut them in slices before. Plan on 2 slices per kid since they are also having crackers - so an orange would feed either 3 kids, so 10 oranges?? Some kids won't want oranges and some kids may want more.
