Snack Schedules

I am wondering how everybody feels about snack lists at kids sports. My 4 year old just started soccer and they were passing a snack schedule around. My 13 year old has always been involved in sports and this was going on when he was younger too. My problem with it is my youngest son has peanut allergies and I have to be very cautious about what he eats. My older son is a little overweight and when he was younger I would get frustrated because he was working off some calories and then at the end of the game the team would get treats. The kids seemed to like getting the treats as much as playing the game. When I was growing up at the end of the SEASON the coach might have treated the team to the dairy queen or 7-11 slurpees. When did this snack thing get started? Is there any way we can get it to end? I would really like to hear your opinions.

Hello D.,

I agree with Nicole. First of all, I would let the team know about the allergy with the peanuts. I don't think people understand just how dangerous this is. Secondly, I would ask other parents what they thought of just bringing Orange Slices and Water. Or, grapes, melon, etc. I never understood the running off the extra pounds and then putting it back on over at the sidelines. I love the Fruit and Water idea. It needs to come from us first if our kids are going to live healthier life styles in the future. I commend you for bringing attention to this. I am a coach myself and request this from the parents. Good Luck!!!

When I played soccer we got orange slices and water? I guess things have changed. I would suggest that the snacks be limited to fruit and water. Grapes, apples, oranges, melon..all healthy, refreshing and easy to package in small sizes. Maybe if you make the suggestion, everyone will agree?

I am so with you on the snacks! We are actually looking into sending my daughter to Montesorri because the quality of the food in the local schools here is AWFUL!! The elementary schools have warmers.... warmers!! They don't cook!!!

I don't trust that my daughter will be able to make appropriate food choices when the choices are chicken nuggets, fries, hamburger, apple slices? Really... what would most kids pick?

I am a work at home mom... my daughter helps me bake muffins and cookies, she helps me cook breakfast, lunch and dinner. We go out to eat at times but for the most part we eat very healthy food.

I think that if we are going to try and tackle obesity in children we are going to have to start looking at the school lunch programs and the things that parents are providing for snacks. We need to educate people on how to read labels... what is in a Little Debbie treat that a child needs to eat?

I totally agree. It seems like food has become a part of every activity and too often a reward. Sometimes the kids look forward to the snack/treat as much as they do the acitvity. I think we just have to speak up, even if it puts others off and makes our kids whine. We do need to change this "normal" behavior. And when/why did people start thinking that goldfish crackers and fruit snacks are healthy.....because they are not!

I totally agree with you. My oldest is also 13 and I don't recall this when he was younger though.
At my near 6 year olds soccer there is a snack schedule. I usually try to get something sort of healthy. The last time it was my turn I took pretzels. I normally put them in baggies because the single serve bags are just to big for 5 and 6 year olds, it's a snack not a meal. I've done apples, cheese sticks and grapes(not at the same time though). The kids always seem excited to get what ever I pick. It really ticks me off when a mom bring oreo's or other junk food.
While we're on the subject, school snacks are another big problem for me! My son's preschool has a "healthy snack" rule posted right on the snack schedule. Since when are cupcakes healthy???? He only goes to school for 2 1/2 hours in the morning, do they need cupcakes at 10 A.M.?? Ok, enough of my rant!
As far as getting rid of snacks at sports, I think the kids enjoy it. Which is fine. I just wish OTHER people would think before they pick up the junk and bring it! I'm glad I'm not the only one that has an issue with snacks that others choose to feed our kids. Maybe if we start refusing the junk for our kids (have a healthy snack in the car) the other parents will take the hint and stop bringing it. I just don't see it going away though.
Have a great day!
