I just take the battery out. Much easier than cleaning up a smashed smoke detector. Incidentally, they don't last forever. About 10 years is what my firefighter friend tells me. After that they can malfunction and go off at odd times, and they aren't as efficient as a new one. If you're having problems, replace them.

All my smoke detectors are hard wired to the electrical system. I have at other people's homes pulled the battery. I was asked to do it by the way.

I had one of mine that isn't part of the alarm system go nuts so I disconnected the wires to it, capped them and put it back up so it looks normal. I didn't want the builder to put them in anyway so no loss. It sits three feet from the monitored detector.

Oh lord you are the toy bashing mom. It has been a while hasn't it? :p Perhaps you should considered not bringing objects in your home that make noise in the first place.

Girl - you really do need help!! SMILES!!!

If you have sensitivity to noise - you really need to see a doctor for it.

Thank God we're not talking about smashing toys anymore.

If the smoke detector is going off - you might want to check for a fire! :O

You can remove the batteries as well...then it will never beep again.

Broken? Like insmash to peices and make unusable forever and ever? Or just take the battery out?

Every time my husband cooks we have to take the battery out of the thing. Did you know large amounts of steam cause those things to go off? No? Well they do...

Sometimes you have to change ALL the batteries when one goes off. Do it during the day so that you won't have to get up in the middle of the night.

The smoke detector companies recommend that you change the batteries when we go off of daylight savings.

I took the battery out. Shuts them right up. But you do need one. Often replacing the battery does the trick.

I had one going off and I pulled it off the wall and cut the wires! My husband swore it was not that making the noise, (he thought that was just a detector that notified our alarm company) However, once the wires were cut the noise stopped!!! It was so ear piercing I couldnt handle it anymore!!!

Does it just randomly go off or is it because of some sort of smoke or steam? If it just randomly goes off, replace it. They need to be replaced every 8-10 years or so anyway as the sensor will wear out. Pressing the button to test the battery just means that the battery works, not that the smoke detector sensor works.

Yes, I took a broom and smashed it on the ceiling once. I figure it was time for a new one anyway. I did drop one once that was connected to the alarm system, what an expencive pain in the butt that was.

We had an older one that didn't have a battery backup in part of the house. It was hardwired into the house. We had to pull it down and let it dangle until the weekend until we could replace it. There wasn't much we could do at 3 in the morning during the week.
If it has a battery backup you should be able to just take that out.
