Smelly Little Boy

My four year-old son has body oder. He usually takes a bath every other day in the winter and every day in the summer. We have recently started having him bathe every evening. We let him wash himself and then we give him another wash over to make sure he is getting clean. He sweats at night even with just a light sheet, however he loves lots of covers. Even when he has had a bath, he still smells the next morning. We use kid soap, should we change to something else? Any ideas or suggestions?

So What Happened?

I called my ped. and she said to change soaps and use one with a deodorant. She also said to watch for any other signs of early puberty.

We are going to try the change of soap and bathe nightly (mornings are too hectic, because my husband leaves at the crack of dawn and it's just me trying to get myself and two kids out the door.)

If the odor remains or we see other signs, we will go in and have a blood work-up.

Thanks for your feedback. I try to be onto of things without being an overly protective neurotic mom. Some days it feels line a fine line.

a girlfriend of mine just informed me that she smelled when she was a little girl and the pedi told her Mom it was because she drank so much milk.... :)

Try putting powder to keep him a little dry and smelling fresh at night.

You know my sister had the same problem with her son. He was a lot younger when he had that problem. No matter how many time he took a bath and no matter how many times she would give him a good scrub down his underarms would still smell. He is eight now and he doesn't have that problem anymore. He didn't have that problem anymore once he got in his toddler ages. I'm not sying its normal but I guess it does happen more often than you think. I have a 3yr old son and I haven't experienced that problem. So it is different for everyone. Just ask the doctor's opinion maybe they can give you a better answer than any of us.

Do some research on organic milk vs. regular. They say that the hormones that are in regular milk can make children stink when they sweat. There are lots of other benefits to doing the organic as well - no hormones, etc.

The organic milk is expensive, but I made the switch.

Good luck - S.

Ditto on agreeing with Jodi. While I would maybe bathe him in the morning, it is something that you should have checked out.

My 7 yo daughter smells too. I've asked her dr and there doesn't seem to be a puberty problem. After she showers we use deoderant and that helps. She also went through a period where she wouldn't wear socks and her feet and shoes stunk to high heavens. Now she wears socks and got new shoes so the smell is better. Good luck.

Hello T.

I used to have to same problem with my little girl, What we did and it seemed to help. We give Morgan a bath and then cover her body in that Shower to Shower powder. It helped us out. I hope that it works for you too.

Not to be the downer on here, but sometimes a bad smell can stem from a liver problem.

T.,

I would suggest you contact your pediatrician. Children at age 4 should not have overt body odor. It may be something he is eating or it may be a chemical change in his body, but it is best to talk to his doctor to determine what is going on with him.

You might want to try giving him a bathe or shower in the morning. My son sweats during the night as well and I feel he is fresh for the day when he takes a shower in the morning verses at night.
