Hi everyone! I am looking for advice, recommendations, etc.
I have had a Palm Pilot for years – I don’t have my email on it, but used it heavily for my calendar, contacts and task list. I use the notes/task list functionality for things like shopping lists – I keep a running list of all of the places I usually shop and what I need from that store so if I find myself with a few extra moments I can maximize what I do with them. I could sync it with Outlook’s calendar, contacts, tasks and notes easily. Essentially, it has organized my life.
I also really liked that I could sync Word and Excel files, which also helped me stay organized.
After many years, my PDA is dying a slow painful death both the hardware and as a victim of MS Operating System and MS office upgrades that are no longer compatible. Additionally, my very old-school cell phone is now in critical condition. Given Palm’s recent Ch. 11 filing, I imagine that its already crappy customer service is worse, and I don’t want to give them any more of my $. And I would like have one less electronic device to deal with/worry about. So I am considering a smart phone.
But before I invest in one and the required data plan (I have Verizon, whose data plan prices are ridiculous), I am wondering if anyone is using the above described functionality on one and what their experiences are?
I love the idea of being able to download apps for myself and my daughter, access my email and the web. And I like the touchscreens. I hate to text and avoid it at all costs, so ease of texting would not be appealing to me.
I have Verizon email via Outlook at home, Verizon onine email and my company's email - I definitely do not want to change my personal email, and it isn't even an option at work. So getting my calendar and contacts from Verizon and Outlook is pretty important to me.
PLEASE HELP – my head is about to explode.
PS: I have tried Google Calendar and HATE IT. First, it only sync'd about half of my Outlook calendar appt. No matter what I tried, I could not get certain things to sync. Secondly it changed all of my work meetings in Outlook so that even though I was meeting owner, I could not update the meetings. It was a HUGE problem for me and inconvenience for my co-workers because I ended up having to delete and recreate EVERY MEETING!
Well, my Iphone does everything my computer/Ipod/cellphone does only faster and better. I have it through AT&T. I also have 3 teenagers with Iphones or Droid. For 4 phones with unlimited EVERYTHING it runs me about $220 a month. We no longer use a land line. Considering in the 80's my long distance bill was about the same, I say it's a bargain. I am very happy with their service.

I have gmail which syncs everything!
So what my husband puts on my calendar at home creates a reminder on my phone. I have the same contact list on all my computers as my phone. What I search for on my computer comes up on my phone.
I could go on and on but it is like I operate with one machine even though we are talking about three different machines. Perfectly organized.
You can also sync with the google apps, which is beyond office!
Blackberry or iPhone. I've used both, and like them both. iPhone of course has the added benefit of many many free apps. Blackberry hasn't caught up with that yet. The only thing I don't like about my iPhone currently is that the voice recognition software doesn't work with my bluetooth headset. With my Blackberry, when I was driving I could just say "call home". And it would do it. My iPhone won't do that (I don't have an iPhone 4 with Siri).
Go for the iPhone. You can then use the free Cozi app, where you can synch all of your calendars into one. And you can add your family members to the account, so that you all have access to everyone's schedule (no more double booking or wondering who is free and when). Cozi can be accessed from your phone, PC, etc. I must admit that I've never had a different smart phone, so I can't provide a comparison to Blackberry or Droid, etc. But I resisted the iPhone for a long time and now I don't think I could live without it. Easy. Get an iPhone. Once you do, you will wonder how you lived this long without one.
I have an iPhone with Verizon and you can add quite a few emails on it. Our account sill has unlimited data so I am not really sure what they are charging now. Check the Verizon website and pull up different phones (iPhone and Droids) and compare the features. My hubby was a Blackberry user for years and has switched and is happy with the iPhone. It does work just like a computer only smaller.
I forgot when I sync my iPhone to the computer it will update my Outlook Calendar along with my iTunes. I also have it set up for back up with iCloud.
