My son is 8 years old and when he takes a shower I notice small red bumps on his butt. He's always itching his butt in the shower. No new detergent or anything else. Anyone have any idea what it could be? Thanks for helping.
Ok so first want to say thanks for all the helpful answeres and second want to say that I'm not being an inappropriate parent. He showers alone and called me in to tell me about the bumps. I don't sit and watch him shower. that's just disgusting that some would think that.

What does his doctor say?
And why are you watching him shower? That's very inappropriate :-(
Take him to the doctor.
It might be nothing, but if it is something, you want to get it treated.

These types of questions are just impossible for us to answer. Most of us aren't medical folks, first of all, but beyond that, there are so many types of rashes that it's just impossible to really describe them accurately. This is something the pediatrician needs to look at. I realize it's a holiday weekend so you could consider an urgent care walk-in center that may be open outside of regular hours.
Is he calling you in when he showers? Usually 8 year olds shower alone, so I'm wondering if he's specifically asking you about this or if he is specifically asking you about the itch. Are you positive that he is wiping himself properly after he has a bowel movement? Has he been putting anything on his itch that could be making it worse? Sometimes lotions and creams cause yeast infections and make it more of a problem. There are other things that cause rashes, of course, and constantly itching them makes it worse.
He needs to be seen, in my opinion, if this has been going on for a while.
My son has the same thing last winter. He has it on his stomach and arms as well as his butt. The pediatrician said it was a type of excema and prescribed a steroid cream.
the chlorine in the water will do that.. in our shower, my have a nozzle that takes it out... prior, the chlorine, coupled with the warm water caused a lot of itching.... if you can't get a filter, then try using less hot water and keep it more tepid.. any rash likes the warmth..... and rashes LOVE hot water... as you can imagine, the hot water causes the blood vessels to open and with the rush of blood to the area, if one is already prone to things like rashes and hives or even a hot water rash as I call it, it can become inflamed.. you may notice that as the day goes on, the rash simmers down...try the tepid showed and the filter (you can buy them online) ... good luck
A person can develop an allergy to anything at any time in their life.
Could be dry skin from winter. Could be a reaction to fabric softener to dryer sheets to something in the water supply.
