I never add water to any meat in a slow cooker. Ham has a lot of water in it already. I'd follow the allrecipes direction.
HI, I have a 1.5 lb ham pre-cooked. that i would like to put in the crock pot so it would be ready for dinner tomorrow night. The directions on the ham say to heat it at a certain tiemp for 1 hr.
I did check allrecipies and it said to rub brown sugar on the ham and put it in the crock pot for 8 hrs on low. I'm a little cocerned that this might dry out. Would a half a cup of water help???
It is frozen right now, I was going to put it in the fridge tonight and pull it up in the am, Figuring it would still be frozen in the middle in the am.
I don't have any pineapple or orange juice. I have oranges, but that's it. Would it be better to squeeze some juice in instead of water? how much?
thanks
Ugg some conflicting advice here. Any one help me figure this out. What if i put a little water in the bottom but maybe put some celery stalks on the bottom criss crossed to prop the ham up from sitting in the liquid???
update, added 1/4 c water it was dry

I cook whole chickens in the slow cooker, with no liquid. It makes it's own.
With a precooked ham, I can pretty much guarantee there is water and sodium in it. It will create it's own liquid as it cooks. If you really want to put liquid in, just barely cover the bottom of the cooker. Don't put a half cup. Your ham will be spongy. I cook ham in the oven like that, it would work fine in the cooker. If you want to use oranges, do the same as water and just barely cover the bottom.
id squeeze a few oranges and mix with water to make a cup and a half or so to put in, slow cookers need liquid
Slow cookers DO NOT need liquid!!! :) (Unless, of course, you are making soup in there.) I would honey or brown sugar the outside of the ham. Scoring the ham first (the 1/8" deep criss cross idea Jean described will get the sugar/honey in the ham...) is a nice touch, but is not absolutely necessary. Good luck.
I agree - I think a ham would dry out even with some liquid cooking it that long.
If you want to add liquid my MIL cooks hers with a can of root beer.
I have cooked a ham in a slow cooker with apple cider or apple juice, just not too much. Came out great. Since it is supposed to be 1 hour, put it on low if you will be gone 8 hours.
If you want to flavor it with some liquid, then pour some over the top of the ham. I would put some knife slices in it though. Ham has enough liquid in it to make its own and if its still partially frozen, it will make liquid. I would cook on low for 8 hours.
i don't think it really matters if you add liquid or not.
I agree with oneandone about the water. You can check the packaging and see if it tells how much water is added, but you shouldn't have to add any at all. After slicing 1/8" deep criss-crosses on the ham, you could rub/coat the ham with brown sugar, then use Orange slices fastened with toothpicks or whole cloves all over (the way you would use pineapple slices). I would also add molasses and honey as well.
I use my crockpot 2-3 times a week. You need to put some liquid in there just to help it out and make sure it cooks evenly. I would mixed the juice that the ham is sitting in with just a bit of water. Enough to cover the bottom of the crock. The celery sticks are a great idea. I would cook low for 8-10 hrs especially if it might still be frozen in the middle.
