Slivers

My 1-year-old loves climbing all over our deck outside, but last night came in with a ton of little slivers in the top of his chubby feet! He isn't thrilled with letting me pull them out, so I'm wondering if anyone has other ideas for doing removing them?

What can I do next?

Reach for the scotch tape before resorting to
Tweezers or a needle. Simply put the scotch tape over the splinter, and then pull it off. Scotch tape removes most splinters painlessly and easily. Hopes this helps.

Duct tape makes it a bit easier as long as there's no hair in the area (which there's not in the feet, of course, but this isn't as do-able on the arm!)

First, apply a bit of neosporin with pain relief to the area and let sit for about 15 minutes to allow the topical to soften the skin. Then, see if you can soak his foot/feet in very warm water- as warm as you can without burning him. Once it's warm, dry thoroughly and apply a piece of duct tape, then wisk it off quickly.

The neosporin will block some of his discomfort, the warm water will open the skin a bit to allow the duct tape to stick to the sliver and be pulled out.

Good luck!

Yes, Watkins makes a product called Petro Carbo Salve. Someone called me wanting some of it and she told me it absolutely works to remove slivers. Rub some on and leave it on overnight, by morning they work themselves out. It says in the literature that it does this but I thought it was pretty crazy. It comes in a small travel size for about $5 and the large tin is about $10. It's awesome stuff for cuts and scraps too! Let me know if you want more info on it.

My son did the samething. I just left them alone and they came out by themselves over the course of about a week. They didn't both him at all. FYI

A nice warm bath could help dislodge them. Warm water helps open the skin a bit and if they aren't really "in there", they should come out. Hopefully they aren't in there festering.

The rug is a good idea. We have the same issue. If the slivers are small and painless, leave them alone. Our bodies are equipped to push them out on their own in time. You may make them worse by making a bigger wound if you try to get them out. If they are painful and your little one screams like a maniac at the very thought of tweezers (like mine) do it when he is asleep.

Also, older generations will tell you to use a poltus (sp?) or 'drawing salve'. I have no idea where to find such a thing, but we still have older patients who have great success!
Good luck!

Nature's Sunshine Products sells "Black Ointment" and it is AMAZING. It is used for other things too (I don't know what) but I use it for slivers. You put it on for a few days (depending on the depth of the sliver) and it softens the skin and helps the sliver, or foreign object to rise up. No screaming, no scraping, no nothing! You can get it on their website. I think Healthy For Life in Cascade sells it too. I'm not sure though. I just order it on the website.

Epsom salt. Give him a bath with epsom salt. It will draw the splinters out. Good Luck.

My kids these all the time. The slivers will come out on their own. I always just keep my eye on them. Some might blister and you can get them out easier that way. Don't dig, but get the easy ones and watch the rest so they don't get infected. I've seen some of them stay in a week before they work themselves out with no problems.

Try applying a drawing ointment such as Quret (ask for at
the Walgreen's pharmacy counter) and cover with a sticky
guaze pad at bedtime. In the morning the splinters should
be on the guaze instead of embedded in his feet.

Occasionally the Nap Fairy visits our house and does stuff like that...the Nap Fairy clips nails, takes off sticky bandaids, and does the general picky stuff that requires your little one to hold still. Most kids sleep so hard that they never wake up when you pick out slivers while they're asleep.

H.,

If they are in deep you can crack an egg and use the film from the top of the schell. Place it on the spot cover with a bandage and the film acts as a dislodging agent. The sliver will come to the top and can be flanked away. Boil-ease will do the same thing but I don't know if I would recommend for a smaller child. Good Luck

PS when my kids were small we used to get bootie slippers and they weren't a loud on the deck without them

This does really help with pulling the slivers, but I figured I would have the same roblem pwith my little one so we put a indoor/outdoor rug down. You can probably get one pretty cheap now, most ourdoor furniture and such are on clearance now. Good luck.

Hi H.,
I always give my boys a nice warm bath and that always seems to help. After that they seem to come out very easily although they usually don't mind me pulling them out.

We've had this problem a couple of times and my kid (he's 6) freaks out if you come near him with tweezers! I have a couple of recommendations that I've heard: 1. put tape on the skin over the splinter and pull the tape off. Sometimes that will pull out the splinter, but you have to use a strong tape-like duct tape. 2. I've heard that if you put elmers glue on it and let it dry and pull it off, it works the same way as the tape (I haven't done this one). 3. The one we always use...soak in the bath tub. So far, this one has worked every time. We let him play in the tub for like an hour and the splinter is gone when we get him out!

Good luck!

Hi H.,

I have never actually tried it but I heard that Elmers glue works well on splinters. I guess you are supposed to put it on the area, let it dry and then peel it off. Good luck and hope it works.
