my daughter is 23 months old, she has been waking up numerous times throughout the night for many months, and my husband and I are unsure how to break the cycle. Any suggestions?

Hi Cindy
I am not a good example or one to give you advice. I have a 23 moonth old as well (she'll be 2 on the 1st of march) and she has been doing the same thing for months. She was wanting to be with us, so separation anxiety. I handled it the wrong way and brought her to bed with us. I know there are other things that are better and I hope you get some good responses. I know you aren't supposed to bring them to bed with you :) we're stuck in that rut now. I've heard patting them to sleep is good, or at least patting them for a minute or so, then letting them go back to selep on their own. I just know it is so hard to let them cry it out. I personally can't do it.
Anyway, I jsut wanted you to know i can sympathize, and it is normal at this age. Good luck!
J.

My son did the same thing at 24 months. I'm not sure how you feel about letting them cry it out, but it worked for us. We let him do this until 26 months every night. Another thing that you might want to make sure is that she doesn't have an ear infection. My son's ears were great when he was 25 months, then I took him in again because he was crying at night only to find out he had horrible double ear infections. So, if she's not crying, let her hang out and she should soon get out of the cycle. Good luck!! S.

Gas meds before bed is good as teh last mom suggested. We have a nite time dada. If the kids wake in the night and we are sure thay are not hungey my husband has an easier time getting them bck to sleep. You r husband will need to give it some time to work. Might be worth a try.

I had the same problem. A friend of mine recommended the book "Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems" by Richard Ferber. I got my son to sleep all night in HIS OWN BED in 2 nights. It works!

I sympathize with you as well. My son is 21 months and is still doing it as well. Are you sure nothing is wrong w/her because I found out last night that my son has been VERY gassy and I've given him gas drops before he goes down and so far he hasn't woke up but the night is still young.

If nothing is wrong w/her, What I do as well is go in the room Do Not Pick her up and lay her down rub on her back and tell her ssssssshhhh it's okay and that mommy loves her and night night but only for 1 -2 min do NOT do it until she falls asleep. It's just to relax her and calm her down because then she will get in the habit.

Good Luck and I hope this helps.
M.

Gas could be your problem. I used Mylincon every night for quite awhile. Also, I've noticed that now that we have been having my son put himself to sleep, that he is more unlikely to wake up during the night. When I say put himself to sleep, I mean reading to him, I hold him in the dark for a bit sometimes singing/sometimes not, then I place him down and say that it is time to go night-night. We let him fuss for a bit, but it has helped having my husband go in there and say "Go to sleep". Magically it works when he does it. My husband has been going out of town lately and it might take me a bit longer than normal, but he's doing it. It is rare that he wakes up in the middle of the night and it is usually gas or teething related, but my husband has to take the night shift because it's quicker that way. Good luck!

Google "scheduled awakenings" and you'll find lots of articles on this subject. I have a friend who is a psychologist and she did this with her child and said it really works.
