Sleeping Trauma

So I have a sweet 8 month old little boy. He had colic and acid reflux when he was a newborn, but he has been off his medication for 3 months and has been sleeping great. I nurse him about 7:30/8 pm and then we pt him in his crib with a little music. He has been content and happy and then just falls off to sleep. The last several nights there has been a total change. 1-10 minutes after we lay him in bed he starts to scream and he doesn't stop for an hour or 2. We try and rock him, change him, sing to him, feed him, try Tylenol for teething, his reflux medicine, really just check everything/anything we can think of and he is only happy when I am holding him while standing up. He has this look like "yeah I finally got what I want"....but he needs his sleep. He will fall asleep lightly and then a minute later he is screaming again. I think it just takes him and hour or 2 to wear himself out so he can't stay awake anymore. One website suggests it could be separation anxiety and to reassure him, but get him to go back to sleep on his own. Anyone experienced something like this? Any suggestions? Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

It is not unusual for kids to start working you at this age so you want to keep that in mind. I would be sure I had the doc check him quick for an ear infection first. Also, be sure to let him/her know what is going on with his sleeping too, sometimes you can be doing something you didn't even realize that is making him have a hard time getting to sleep. All in all, babies are just hard to figure out, and sometimes a check with the doc can give you peace of mind.

Good luck!

Upright and moving USUALLY ='s ear infection, although simply upright tends to be sinus infection or reflux.

How long has he been back on his acid reflux medicine? This sounds to me like his acid reflux is flaring back up. Many babies do not outgrow acid reflux until they're more like 12-15 months old. Also, acid reflux medicine will often take 1-2 weeks before it will start working again, because it has to first repair the area that has been affected by the acid backing up before your child will start to feel relief. While laying flat, the acid can start to creep up the esophagus, causing things to hurt.

It's always tough to determine when to take your baby off of the acid reflux medicine. It's almost deceptive, because your baby may seem fine, but the acid might be slowly deteriorating the throat lining again. Once he gets to the crying stage, it is sometimes because the throat is finally to that raw stage, and thus, nothing is left to help protect it from the acid.

You might check with his doctor and try putting him back on the acid reflux medicine (remember, it is not something that a one or two time dose will fix...he'll need a daily dose for probably 1-2 weeks before you'll start to notice a difference).

I had a lot of luck with the Nap Nanny. It's a big foam chair that babies can sleep in, it keeps them upright, like they are sitting in a big comfy chair & my baby loved it! I think they may be a little pricey, we borrowed from a friend but sometimes the money is worth your sanity! Hope that helps. Good luck!!!

Sounds like there is a solution it is just hard to do (the holding while standing up). I was a colicky baby. Colic and acid reflux together is tough for you and him, it may be flaring back up which would be why there is a sudden change. If that comforts him, why not do it for a while? Slowly transition him back to the crib by standing and having the music on, then after a week or two, sit down, after a week or two rub his back and hum with the music. At 8 months, I hope you don't take it personally. He is not thinking what that look seems to imply, they don't have adult manipulation skills :P I would see about getting him back on the medication or checking him (doctor), it sounds like it may be flaring up again.
