My 16 month old has been wakeing up at 10:30 - 11 pm every night for weeks. Sometimes I can leave him be and he falls back to sleep & other times I have to go a settle him down. He goes to bed (usully without fuss) at 6:30 - 7 pm every night. And gets up around 7am. I don't know what could be the reason for the wake up's, but it is interupting everyones sleep. Any Ideas?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I do ignore him until it goes on too long (more than 30-45 mins.) or if I think he may wake up his almost 3 yr old sister. She is worse about going back to her own bed once up. He did just get a few new teeth, I never thought about that. It may just be habit since they are in now.

I always changed my furniture around in my house and in my sons room often, about every three months...that is just something I have done since I moved out of my parents house. I never knew it would affect my sons sleeping problems but it seemed to. Whenever I moved his furniture around in his room he'd have nightmares. He would come into our room and sleep on a bed I had made for him on the floor beside our bed. I am not sure if it was the furniture that did it...but I stopped doing it anyway and it helped him to sleep through the nights alot better in his own room. Now that I say it out loud it sounds a little silly, but hey, it worked. Maybe if you have dramatically changed something in your house (any room) it might be the issue. ???

You didn't mention how much sleep he's getting in naps, but I'm wondering if it's just too much at night. Maybe putting him to bed a little later would help. Our son close to that age requires so little sleep to be happy we wish he would sleep more. He doesn't do well without good daytime naps, so nights are very short for him. Every kid is different. What you described worked so well for our first! We can only wish sometimes!

Have you read "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child"? I think the author is Weisbelluth. They call it the sleep bible. I'd bet your little guy is just excited by life & wants to experience it more, even in the middle of the night. My suggestion? Grit your teeth & ignore him if he wakes up in the middle of the night. He doesn't NEED anything. Don't reinforce his habit. Good luck!

Hi there! I have an 18 month old and I can relate! I started putting a couple of stuffed animals and a couple of soft toys in his bed and if he woke up unexpectedly I would simply let him be and he would settle himself...I also used to put my son to bed at 7 and I extended his bedtime to 8:00 and it has made a huge difference...he still sleeps until 7:30! Good luck!

He is probably cutting molars, really can be painful and occur mainly at night. Try giving him some Tylenol before bedtime. Just do not continue to go to him as it will be a habit even after the teething passes. Kids go through quirky waking up stages, my daughter did and it was about the same time and she would eventually get herself back to sleep. He could be having bad dreams, however those don't usually happen for longer periods of time. Try teething tablets or tylenol before bed, check his back gums too.
Hang in there it is probably just a phase.

Maybe 630-7 is too early to go to bed, I don't know if you have a daily routine or how often your child naps during the day, but maybe going to bed that early feels like a nap to him instead of bed time. My son goes to bed between 830 and 9, sleeps all night, gets up at 7 and takes a 2 hour nap everyday. I hope you get through this!
