Sleep Strike for 17Mo Old?

Hi ladies,
My little man has been a pretty good sleeper up until recently (some road bumps with developmental stuff, but all went way on their own). We're now a week into him putting up a SERIOUS fight for naps and bedtime. Screaming hysterically, wants to be rocked to sleep (he'll actually point at the rocker!), night waking for his paci, etc...

This too shall pass, I know. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this at this age and what happened? I don't mind rocking him to sleep from time to time, but I'm terrified of creating a monster.

My daughter started a nap strike around 17 months. She is now 20.5 months and still not napping every day. We have recently moved her to a new room, with a twin bed on the floor. She no longer fights naps, as she can just play if she doesn't feel like sleeping. It's working out fine.

Hang in there, but seriously, this could last months. I was reading that sleep strikes are common from 18-21 months, with sleep issues lasting the whole period for some kids. Hopefully your son will settle down soon!

When my daughter's strike began, I started singing/rocking her. I sing Rock-A-Bye-Baby TWICE and then I leave the room. If I was you, I'd put a limit like that on the rocking. I'd also get rid of the pacifier. If he's going to be on a sleep strike anyway, you might as well get a bunch of things accomplished at once.

Sleep strikes seem to happen multiple times through toddler-hood -- and they are especially common between 18-26 months! My daughter had one around 19 months, while my son had one at 19 months and at 27 months or so. Most likely, your son is figuring out that he actually has a "say" in whether he goes to sleep or not, and he is exerting some of his own control. Welcome to the very early beginnings of "the terrible twos!"

Yes...this too shall pass! If you do not want to create more sleeping issues, stick to your guns and don't change your routine much. My daughter resumed her awesome sleeping habits quickly. But be aware: if your son is a stubborn or strong-willed child, he may try to climb out of his crib. That's when we purchased a crib tent!

I wish I had some advice for you but I am currently going through the same thing with my toddler. It started around 17 or 18 months and now he is 22 months and we are still having sleep issues. He wanted to be rocked in the chair all the time, I don't do that anymore and stick to my guns.

One week ago we transferred him into a toddler bed since he could hop out of his crib. He wakes at least 2 times every night and has missed most of his naps.

We are working through it and I am hoping that I don't create a monster. He was never a good/sound sleeper so I guess it's just the way of the world for me.

Good luck!

Did not read the other responses so I may just be repeating others.
My son was completely done with naps by the time he was 2 years old. Don't force him to take naps, instead have quite time like reading a book together or listen to some good music.
If a child is taking a nap that he dose not need you will most definitely have problems with him sleeping at night because he is not tired.
My 2 cents is cut the nap and see what happens.
