My husband and I are thinking of buying a new mattress and I'm so afraid we'll spend a lot of money just to get one home and not like it. It's so hard for me to truly tell when I lay on them in the store what I'll really like when I get in home and really trying to sleep.
I see a lot of ads for the sleep number bed. Of course all of the testimonials they have in their ads and web sites are all favorable. I just wanted to see if anyone out there has one and aren't really happy with it....or if there is another mattress they would recommend. I think we tend to like them a little more soft than firm, but not so much there isn't any support.
Hopefully you all can help me get started in the right direction!
I have the sleep number and LOVE IT! I originally had one of those foam mattresses and it was so hard and I HATED IT!
The sleep number is great. Some days I want it firmer, others softer and I can adjust it when I want and how I want. It's awesome.

We have a Simmons which is comfortable and I love the fact that you can't feel the other person in the bed move. However, I have a lot of problems with the memory foam in the pillow top retaining too much heat and with my post menapausal body that's a BIG problem. I need as little heat retention around me as possible!! Good luck.

We recently tried a TON of beds and here is what we found: 1) we didn't like the feel of the sleep number bed (too similar to a water bed feel)
2) prices are cheapest at Rooms To Go
3) Rooms to Go had nice mattresses but they don't sell the one we really fell in love with- Kingsdown so we went elsewhere
4)Kingsdown is pricey, but has a 20 year non prorated warranty (meaning 19 years from now if it goes defective we will get a full refund)
5) you can talk down a mattresses salesman (not at Rooms To Go, but at regular stores), we found their bottom line was about 30% lower than the marked price. And we spent about 1,950 on a King size mattress that was marked 2,800.
We shopped for a long time and are happy with our choice (we've had it for about 3 weeks). I HIGHLY advise you to purchase a good mattress protecting cover too and don't ever remove tags on the mattress. Removal of law tags or stains will instantly void your warranty. We bought our cover from Rooms To Go for $60. The cover has a 10 year warranty on it.
My in laws have a sleep number bed and love theirs, it wasn't right for us though. Try it in the stores (they have one at North East Mall and some in stores like Mattress Giant or Mattress King- I can't remember which). They are not really more expensive than other quality mattresses.
Side notes: Temperpedic mattresses sound great- but if your house is cold they get HARD and if you roll around at night they are miserable because you have indentations where you just were...
A combo latex and memoryfoam pillowtop is best in that it will support you, form to you- but bounce right back when you roll over and the latex doesn't break down as fast.
ALSO if you buy the mattress and mattress cover from the same store they will allow you 90 days to try the mattress and return it if you don't like it- but you must buy the cover there too and they are pretty expensive at mattress stores.

We have a latex mattress - they are hard to find but well worth looking at. Not as expensive as the sleep number. When we purchased ours, over 6 years ago, you had an option of soft, medium, or hard. My husband wanted the hard because of his back, and it is hard! but with the pillow top it is good. Latex is very very heavy and they last FOREVER!! My husband's uncle has one and he bought it almost 40 years ago! And it is still in great condition and very comfortable. The two best features of the latex is 1. support (no springs) and 2. no movement - my husband moves a lot when he sleeps but I don't ever "feel it" on my side of the bed (my side doesn't move). We love ours and it bets buying a spring mattress or the expensive Sleep Number.

Wow - you've gotten a lot of responses!
I have had a Sleep Number bed (the 5000 model, I think, but it may be the 7000) for 6 years and really do love it. We got it when my son was 1 and I'd gone through a really tough pregnancy with him and sleeping was just such a precious comodity. The subsequent pregnancy with my daughter was notably easier and I think it had a lot to do with the fact that sleeping was so wonderful. She co-slept there with us for about 8 months.
My 90 year old grandmother takes a nap in our bed every time she comes over to see us. My mom got a Tempurpedic about the same time I got my Sleep Number and she wishes she had gotten a Sleep Number instead. In fact, she was thinking of getting rid of the Tempurpedic in favor of the other.
The only thing that really comes close to the comfort of our bed is The Heavenly Bed that the Westin Hotels have.

We recently (less than a year ago) purchased a sleep number bed as I was having pain in my hip area and was sleeping a lot on the couch. I was like you and worried that we were going to spend a lot of money on something that ultimately I didn't like. But I LOVE our sleep number bed. We purchased the middle of the line expanded queen bed with additional padding on the mattress cover. I am slepping much better with less pain when I wake up. I sleep at a very low number and my husband sleeps at a higher number.
If you decide to purchase a sleep number we found that the best prices were at the sleep number stores versus stores that sell multiple brands. Also, be sure to get a well padded mattress cover (have to pay extra for this - but worth it) as my sister and her husband purchased a sleep number bed prior to us and they did not opt for additional padding and my sister "thinks" that she can "hear" the air moving in the chamber of the bed and that her bed gets hot. But sometimes my sister can be a little strange!
Hope that helps you out.

My husband and I recently got married. We were in the market for a new mattress and considered the sleep number bed. So we requested a room with one for our honeymoon let me tell you the honeymoon was great but that bed was horrible. It is a big air mattress. and there is some type of bar in the middle of it that makes it very hard and uncomfortable to cuddle let alone do anything else and there could never be a third person like your kid in the bed because they would have to sleep on that hard bar. Just get a regular tempurpedic mattress you'll be better off in the long run. Oh yea and I get up at least once during the night and when I would get out the bed i would always hurt myself on the hard box rim aroung the edge of the bed. this is really not good If you have little ones.

We have had our sleep number for two years and neither of us has found our number yet. We had several friends with them and they all gave rave reviews so we decided to buy one. It is not uncomfortable but I wouldn't but another one. The last regular mattress we had was an expensive Serta and after a year it had holes where we both slept. I am not thin but I am not heavy either, at the time I weighed about 140. We figured the sleep number would not so that. We were right it has not, however if you buy the dual control and each have different numbers the surface of the bed isn't level. It is not a bad but after two years I thought I would have known my number and keep it on that setting.

Hi K.,
I have wanted a sleep number for years. My husband likes a firm mattress and I like a soft one so we were certain the sleep number would be perfect for us. We were very wrong.
Yes, I could keep my side soft and he could keep his firm, but it really just felt like an air mattress with a lot or a little air in it. Very uncomfortable. We were ready to return it after two weeks but we had to keep it for at least 30 days so we suffered through the next two weeks.
We went back to Mattress Firm to exchange it for another mattress, but of course you can't get a cheaper one unless you want to eat the cost difference so we ended up paying more for a tempurpedic. It is much better for us.

We LOVE our Sleep Number Bed. We have had it for about 4 years, and bought it right after I became pregnant. I was able to adjust the mattress as I went through my pregnancy, which was an added benefit. My husband likes softer than I do, and it's great to be able to each have our own side adjust to what we like. We do have a king size, and it was a couple thousand dollars, but I believe it was a good investment for the next MANY MANY years! It still looks like it's not a day old, as this mattress does not wear down like normal mattresses, over time. Yes, as someone mentioned, it's basically air mattresses inside a very thick foam casing that surrounds them. However, I see no wear on the side of the beds, like after you sit on regular mattresses for so long, on the edge of the bed, they start to droop, you feel like you're falling off, etc. There is NONE of that with this bed. Also, I do not understand how someone would hear the mattress filling up all night, as it should adjust within seconds, as to what number you want it on. That would have to have been a defect or something, I would think? If you're debating between a queen and king, I'd go for the king. We were debating, and are SO GLAD we decided on the King size bed! We had the bed delivered to us via UPS, and put it together ourselves, which took maybe 3 hours or so? We had moved our former bed to a child's bedroom, so didn't need it to be picked up and disposed of.

Good grief K., this is like having someone tell you where is a good place to eat, or what is the best car to drive, or which laundry detergent works the best. You will probably get 10 answers for yes and 10 answers for no - what do you do with that? There is no right answer. You just have to figure that out for yourself. But, the way to do it right can help you make the best decision for yourselves. I recommend that you dedicate a few hours solely to mattress shopping and try out all types at the same time: conventional spring, pillow top, tempuerpedic, sleep number, etc. I think the Sleep Number is the one store that is exclusive, and other mattress stores carry a variety. Take your own pillow and comfortable clothes and really get into some sleeping positions at the stores - don't just lay there like you're in a coffin because you're self-conscious of the other shoppers. By the way, we chose the Tempuerpedic and love it. My wife's parents tried it a hated it - so they got a Sleep Number and love it. Also, I think some mattress stores offer a 90-day trial period with some kind of return program.

If they offer the 30 day trial take it! if not, I used to own one, and I had problems with the fact that I like a more firm mattress, and my hubby likes a feather bed! Now what do you think happens when both sides of the bed are set at polar opposites? They meet in the middle ALL NIGHT LONG!!!! If you like the same firmness, this will not be a problem, and their customer service dept bends over backwards to make you happy, but we finally after five years went with a temper-pedic, and we love it. My only caution on that is to pay the extra and get the top of the line model, it really makes a difference. Hope this helps in your decision making process.
I just read the comment on the smell and heat problems with the temper-pedic, I have to wonder if they are real temper-pedis or knock offs. I too sweat due to menopause, and I have had no additional problems with the mattress. It was recommended that we invest in the matress cover, as we did, there is no smell, and as far as an electric blanket goes, my hubby would die with out his and we haven't gone up in flames yet!

We have a Sleep Number and my husband has loved it since day one. It took me a little longer to figure out my number and get used to it, and there are big depressions in it where we sleep unless we pump it up to a higher number during the day.
The thing that freaked me out was that they offered to dispose of our old mattress and we let them, and then I was afraid I would hate the bed and have nothing else to sleep on. I've adjusted my number a bunch of times to figure out where I like it and it takes some getting used to. I do have some friends who hated theirs, but it ended up being good for us.
I think sleeping at the Radisson is a good idea.

WE have never woken up with the bed deflated, that would only happen if something somehow pushed the remote all they way down to zero. EX, one time hubby dropped a book on top of the remote and it started deflating, but we noticed immediately. Not sure what happened as the other mom describe. I can only tell you we are extremely happy with ours. Our middle son also has back problems and we have the twin size for him. His doesn't show the exact number on the read out, but you can adjust up or down, for sofer or harder...
Good Luck in your search for a bed. It took us a long time to decide. I think they do offer a 30 night trial as do the ones that make that other mattress, the memory foam one..
take care,

I did not like the controlled mattress we purchased, bad experience, for us, it did not work out, husband insisted and had it delivered!
Reading the majority of these answers, it appears that more are for, not against, the mattress.
However, it just simply did not work out for us. I wish I had gone to the Radison and slept on one all night; if I had that information~we would have!
With the number bed, there were mornings I awoke up to discover the mattress deflated; I would be laying on the support board.(Beats me how that happened!)The bed was def too hard for me. Finally, and hallelujah sister ~ it went back.
I continued the search, luckily the third mattress is fine, and we've had it approximately three years now!
(sorry I don't remember the name.)
Beware; there are some companies that will have a reason they cannot take it back, or give you all your money back. Be careful!
But by all means, good luck, K.

I liked the idea of checking out the sleep number bed at the Radison first! If I were you, I would check things out this way - the drawback is that you might need several nights to figure out your best "number."
My husband and I bought a pillow top mattress about 6 years ago. We've been pleased, but I'm starting to wonder if it's developing depressions where our bodies usually lie.
My friend has a sleep number bed and absolutely loves it. She and her husband sleep at very different numbers. She had problems with her back and started at one number and over time slowly adjusted it as her back improved with the use of the bed.
Good luck!

PS I had to come back and add a comment... We had considered getting a tempurpedic (sp?) mattress, but I was having hot flashes and night sweats at the time (perimenopause), and from the description of how the t.m. worked, I thought that it would be too hot in the middle of the night. Plus, I don't know how wise it would be to use an electric blanket to heat up the bed and we love our e.b. in the winter time! My body gets cold and stiff and I can't go to sleep until it warms up. (I already take thyroid medicine).

The only thing that I do not like about it is that in the middle of the matress there is somewhat of a "hump." I did not notice it until my son slept with us a few times and he would roll off to one side or the other (my husbands or mine). So, if you are a snuggler with your hubby, it will now be a little more complicated.

Hi! We just bought two new beds last year. I looked for a long time because they are so expensive and then to not like...
I researched the sleep # bed - did you know they are just air mattresses in a box? Quite a bit more crafted than that to be fair but that is what is summed up to be to me when I saw the construction of it.
I was looking for a bed for my teen daughter who has grown like crazy and stopped into Unclaimed Freight in Arlington (TX)of 157. They had a good selection and the price for us was unreal.
I bought my daughter's queen for $500. I researched even more on the way home and for the same bed found it to be $1500. in retail stores.
I went back and bought our king, box springs and all for $700. I knew from my years of looking that this was a great price. King beds with pillow tops usually run $2000 - $2500 at least.
I love our bed - we cannot imagine how we ever slept before and we do sleep better now. I love crawling in bed at night because it is so comfortable - one of those padded tops with a support through it so it doesn't have to be flipped and will not dip in the middle.
My daughter has issues with her back and loves her bed too - bought the same kind. When her friends spend the night they all comment on how comfortable her bed is.
I will look later and see if I can find the brand name for you.
Have fun shopping. C.

My husband and I purchased one last April as I have wanted one for a long time and my husband has some back problems. You totally will not regret it as it will be the best investment you ever made! We got the expanded queen and like you I like my side softer. My sleep number is 30 and my husbands is a 40. When you go to buy yours go into the deal with the utmost confidence that you will absolutely love it! It used to take me an hour of tossing and turning before I could get to sleep and now all I remember doing is laying my head down on the pillow. If I or my husband gets up during the night, we never wake the other up at all. Getting a Sleep Number was the best investment we ever made!

Hi K.! Not sure if you have gotten a bed yet by now or not, but here is what we have learned with buying mattresses.
1. Take the time to go to many stores and lay on them for 15+ minutes. If you lay down for a few minutes and are already uncomfortable...get up and move on to the next.
2. Once you find one that you like, most stores have a 30+ day period that you can use the bed and if you dislike it you can return it. You may have to pay to get it back to the store. Make sure to check store policies.
3. If price is an issue, once you have a bed in mind, ask the salesperson if they have one that someone else had bought but didn't like for whatever reason and returned it within the 30 days etc. You can get it for about 1/2 price if that is the case. However, different stores, but within the same company can offer you the same bed but give you different prices, so make sure you really look around if price is an issue. Make sure you clarify warranty and the return policy if getting a barely used bed. The bed we got, the couple that originally bought it, used it 2 days and returned it to the store because they didn't like the feel. Nothing wrong with the bed...just not for them.
We ended up settling with a Temperpedic and it has just been heaven for my back. My chiro recommends the sleep #, but I just couldn't take the "air bed" feel that it has. I think it all boils down to personal preference.
Good luck to anyone on a bed search. I think the most important thing is to make sure they have a 30+ night guarantee on comfort so you can return it if you don't like it and not be stuck with an uncomfortable bed:)

We have had a sleep number bed for 3 yrs & I hated it. I like a firm bed with a soft surface. I finally went and bought a fiberbed cover for my mattress and I finally love it. You are right about their testimonials. I wrote mine about not liking my bed & could never find it on their site. I also had a prob. with my remote. My puppy chewed through the wire and the said I would have to buy a new motor b/c it was all attached. It was about $1500. My husband figured out how to rewire it & it has been fine. Good luck with your decision. By the way, I have the 2nd to the best sleep number. I can't remember the #.

Hi. My husband and I LOVE our Sleep Number bed. We have had ours now for 8 years and it's still wonderful, very comfortable. He likes a very firm mattress and I like a softer mattress. We have adjusted them over the years if needed in case we were sore from working out, or when I was pregnant. They are very much worth the price. Also, making the bed/changing the sheets is easier with this bed because it is not so heavy to lift the mattress. A king size is really 2 mattresses put together on 1 platform. Go buy one, you'L. be happy!

I do not advise a pillow top of any kind. I have two huge holes in my matress. They don't hold up I bought the top of the line Sterns & Foster at over 3 grand. Not a good idea.

I have heard similar things about the Sleep Number bed--basically being an air mattress, and that many of them deflate by the morning. Not fun! We were seriously considering one till we were talked out it by the salesperson.
We first bought the Tempur Pedic (Rhaspody, I think). My husband wanted one for years and I was torn between two, but decided to go for it, since there was a 90 day trial period. It was SO hot. We also both ended up with worse body aches afterwards, as we sunk into the bed and didn't move the rest of the night. I had more numbness and tingling in arms, shoulders and hips with that bed! It was really disappointing.
We ended up trading that in for a Simmons Black series mattress. It's a Plush (called the Edaline) and we love it. It's definitely firm, but soft on top. You could try their pillow top models. The Black series is their top of the line, but I don't think it costs quite as much as S&F. Plus, it has a 20 year warranty.
While you can try beds out and exchange them at some stores, it isn't always the simplest process. If you choose to do that, make sure you have a protective cover (just in case you have a spill/stain). Also, sometimes the freebies you get with a bed (like tempur pedic pillows) cannot be returned and then you have to pay for them as well (at least at the store we went to).

I bought a sleep number about three years ago and I love it. I like that I could change the support when I was pregnant and depending on how I feel, or what mood I am in I can make it softer or firmer. It was well worth the money, and also all of the parts are replaceable, so, if the top gets stained you can just order a new one. I have a pillow topped one and my son wet the bed one night. I just unzipped the cover and washed it in an extra large commercial washer and laid it in the sun to dry. Good luck on your search for the perfect mattress.

My husband and I have had our sleep number bed (the 7000) for about 4 years, and absolutely love it! My side is usually set to 45, and his is 60, so not a huge difference. The only thing I would mention is that if you set one side very low and the other very high, then obviously you'll be able to feel the difference in the middle. We sleep great on ours and miss it when we're away from home!
