Hi, I'm wondering what to do about my 18.5 month old who has all of a sudden been waking up an hour early crying and calling for mama. Should I ignore him and have him try to put himself back to sleep or just get him up early?

What can I do next?

It could be that he is cold. The weather just started to change, and my son did the same thing. I made sure that I went in and covered him before I went to bed, and he started sleeping again. Did his diaper leak? We had to switch to night-time diapers when our son was 12 months, because he was waking up early. I agree with letting him try to put himself back to sleep if he wakes up early. As long as he can't get out of his crib, I would just leave him. Good luck!

first try letting him fall back asleep. Leave some books in his crib to occupy himself if he doesn't fall asleep. The next thing is I would bring him in bed with you. When my kids get up before 6:30 I allow them to come into bed with me. I'll turn on the t.v. and they watch and I usually get a half hour. This is the best on the weekend, kids just don't realize it's saturday.

guess I am meaning and have learned my lesson from my kids, I would check on the child the FIRST day it happened just in case something was really wrong. But after that, nope, I'd ignore them. Treat it like you would any other middle of the night waking, if you respond to those by just going in and giving a hug and laying them back down, do that now. But you do NOT want them being up for the day.

Why in the world would you ignore your son when he's waking up crying and calling you? How would you feel if you woke up crying and called out to someone and they ignored you?

Please do not ignore your child! He needs you! If he wants up, place some toys in a basket by your bed. That way, you are right there and he can quietly play if he is not tired! Some children go through spurts where they awaken early. They are like us--I don't always sleep the same everynight, sometimes I want to lay in bed, sometimes I can't wait to get moving!
