I recently weaned myself off of klonopin which my dr prescribed me to help my mind shut down so I could sleep. I weaned myself off because I didnt want to be on a benzo after doing some research on it. My question is I am back to my waking up at least 5 times a night and mind racing. What are some OTC things you guys like? A bath, chamomile tea all that stuff doesnt help I dont have too big of problems falling asleep its staying asleep. I need to be able to function if I need to for the kids or my husband who is a type 1 diabetic so I cant be totally out of it if he needs help.

melatonin. calcium. slumberland snacks has something called sleep squares, that are chocolate chewies!
but most sleep aids will definitely make you kinda groggy. even something like 'simply sleep' makes me pretty zombie-ish the next day. i tend to stick to the baths, and chamomile or valerian tea, lavender drops and so forth.

I went into premature menopause which caused major sleep issues. So, I do 1/2 dose of Simply Sleep at night. Works for me, and I'm not too tired in the morning. I know that Nyquil just make ZZQuil which is the sleep agent but in liquid format. I haven't tried that, but it might hit you a little faster.

I have used benedryl and Zquill (purple box)

These have helped my daughter and myself but we do not take them on a daily basis... only when we just can't sleep or experienced a night of no sleep so we take it to ensure some sleep.

These are the strongest things I have taken.

Have you tried melatonin or ZZZ quill? Works great for my son and friend. They are non habit forming, give them a try. If your mind is always racing, why don't you try another drug made for anxiety. Klonopin is made for epilepsy. In some case it is used for anxiety but isn't made for that. Talk to your Dr.

I know this isn't a physical remedy, however, it is an extremely powerful and effective remedy.

Put a notebook and pen by your bed. Just before you go to bed "puke on paper" all of your thoughts. Don't censor your writing. It doesn't have to be sentences, good grammer, or even legible. Just pour out on paper whatever is going through your head. Even if you wake up in the middle of the night "puke on paper" again.

I am in the same boat as you.

I will be following your answers to see if I can get some help too!

~I have tried all the over the counter sleep aids (most have the same active ingredient, including the new Nyquil Zyquil that I was hoping was going to be different but it's not!) and none of them help me. I continue to wake up several times a night and it's getting really old!

I take a prescription medication, trazadone, for sleep. I went thru a sleep study prescribed by my doctor to rule out reasons for sleeplessness. He then prescribed trazadone. During the study, I also learned about sleep hygiene. Such things as going to bed and getting up at the same time every night. Only doing quiet calming things for an hour before going to bed. Not watching TV or being on the computer during that time. Getting at least 15 minutes of sun in the morning. etc. That helped some.

Trazadone was formulated as an anti-depressant originally. Now it's mostly used just for sleep. I've been on it for over a year and have not developed a dependency for it. I take it once I wake up and am unable to get back to sleep. It doesn't make me groggy and I'm able to function when I wake up but I've read on this site that it does slow down their minds for some.

Something that works really well for me is called Gaba Calm. You can buy it at Vitamin Cottage, Sprouts, Whole Foods. It helps slow down my racing mind and I typically sleep through the whole night. I take it about 45 minutes before going to bed. Good luck!
