My daughter is almost 6 months and she is not sitting up on her own yet. I know that each child is different, but there is a baby that is a month younger then my daughter and he is sitting up by himself. What is normal? The doctor does not seem concerned, she rolls over she is trying to crawl, any suggestions? I feel so stupid because I work at a doctors office but when it comes to my daughter I feel stupid. :(

What can I do next?

My daughter was so chubby she didn't sit up until 9 months.

Enjoy you child, DO NOT waste time comparing her developmental milestones with other children. My son, born after 4 miscarraiges, rolled over once at 4 months - and then was a lump on the floor until he rolled over at 7 months - sat up at 8+ months, and did not even try to crawl until 11 months. He also only spoke 8 words on his second bday - but within 3 months he was quite verbal. Kids grow at different rates!! Who cares or has the time to compare! He's now 13 and fabulous!!

I think if your daughter is trying to roll and crawl, it does not matter that she is not sitting up. I often worry about my own son's milestones so I read alot. I can always find information that says he is right where he should be developmentally. One article I read said you should only start to be concerned if your baby is not attempting to do anything at all. My niece did not sit until 9 months, crawled at a year and walked at 18 months. She had great verbal and fine motor skills.
I hope this is helpful for you.

"Normal" in babies covers a really wide range. My older son learned to sit himself up, pull himself up, and crawl, all in 1 week when he not quite 8 months old. He walked at 14 months. My younger son was crawling at 8 months and walking at 10-1/2 months. Their teething patterns were different, growth patterns were different, in fact, they've been almost completely different their entire lives (they are now 15 & 21 years old). And yet, they are both always in the "normal" range. There's always going to be a baby who is "ahead" of your baby, even if your baby is the most amazing genius baby in the world (and I'll bet she is!).

When Zack walked at a young age, he was not very steady & fell alot. David, who waited, was rock solid and almost never fell. One of my friends had a daughter who walked at 20 months, but was already speaking in full sentences at 18 months. David was still more monosyllabic at that age, though you'd never guess it now because he talks like he swallowed a dictionary.

I teach music classes for little ones, including infants. They are all so different in that first year, and they develop at very different rates. Be patient. Love your daughter "in the moment." She sounds like a real peach!
