Hey J.,
Have you tried putting plain water in the sippy cup instead of milk or juice? Water won't ruin her teeth when she drinks it at night or falls asleep with it in her mouth.
I need help. My 18 month old daughter treats her sippy cup like it is her bottle she had not been on a bottle since she was 12 months she only does this at night when it is time to go to bed. HELP
Thank you all for the advice I will have to try putting water in a cup with a straw I will let everyone know how it works
Hey J.,

She will get over doing this...does she suck her thumb or anything? My youngest did this for about 2 weeks and then he just threw his cup down and that was that. he would suck on it empyt like a bottle and I could hear him sucking on it and then he would fall asleep. just give her some time and don't try to take it away just let her give it up when she is ready. let me know how things go!! good luck
Well I know what you mean....my daughter did the same thing at about the same age and I hate to say this but for her it was like it was a phase. She would want her cup and lay down with it (even if it was empty because she drank it all) it was there for her and thats all she wanted. The weird thing for me was that my daughter only used a bottle every now and then (because I nursed her) but she used the cup in the same way she would have a bottle. We just tried to distract her from wanting the cup at bed time with a bear or blanket. It worked and it last probably about 6 months but now she is fine. Also I might suggest using a cup that the spout isnt similar to a bottle. Maybe one with a straw or that she has to sit up to use. If you need anymore help or want to talk feel free.....I guess this isn't too common of a problem since the first 2 people weren't sure what you were talking about :) Talk to you later.
What do you mean she uses it like a bottle?
My son did the same thing and he was weened off the bottle at 11 months. he will be 4 years old next month and this is sooo funny....At night when he is sleeping he still sucks like there is a bottle in his mouth or something. he might fall asleep on the chair while we are watching tv and I'll hear a slurp slurp and look over and he is sucking the air lol. It's so and funny. I don't know if he has dreams about still being a baby or what. he is not drinking out of a sippy anymore either, but sometimes during the day he still might catch himself sucking out of his cup. I think its just a reflex from doing what they have been doing since they were born.
Do you give your youngest a pacy? Some times I give my 21 month old son a sippie cup when laying down for a nap but when betime (night) comes I only let him have his pacy. I don't give him a sippie for any reason. If she wants it, then try to give it to her before laying down so that way, once she goes down she should not need it.
Hey girl, I know what you mean about that, I have a granddaughter whose a Downs baby and she thought she needed it too. We have taught her to sit in our lap and drink her cup, all she wants then we lay down in bed and go to sleep. It may seem upsetting to her at first, but she will eventually get into a routine. And I always say, Be consistant.
My daughter was the same way..once we did away with the bottle she just latched onto her "cup". It took a little while to get too a point where she didnt want her cup when she went to bed at night. First I gave her the cup then we changed by putting water in her cup instead of milk (the milk at bedtime is very very bad for their teeth) then we changed to the cups with straws (also better for her teeth). Before we started potty training I would give her the cup and let her take a few sips of water then I would take the cup out of her room, so she could get used to falling asleep without the cup...it takes awhile to change their routines, but eventually it works out.
By treating it like a sippy cup what are you meaning?
