Sippy Cup and Juice Issues.

My 21 month old won't drink out of a sippy cup. I'm having the hardest time making the switch. He loves milk and water, but 75% of the time its milk. I have bought over 13 different sippy cups. I've replaced nipple after nipple on his bottles even thats a hard task he won't take any nipple except silicone. Hes been like that since birth no latex ever. How can I make the switch without it being too hard on. I would love to see him drink some kind of juice atleast once a day, thats almost as hard as the sippy cup switch. Any advice I'm willing and ready to try something new. Thanks

What can I do next?

We ditched the sippy cups at 20 months, so my advice is to move him to a regular cup. There are quite a few BPA-free plastic tumblers made for little hands - you should be able to find in most kid/baby stores.

As for juice.... why?? Juice has absolutely no nutritional value, even the stuff that's 100% juice. A child's body processes it the same way as candy. It's just empty sugar. Stick with milk or water!

I'm not sure why you WANT him to have juice, or a sippy cup.
Sticky, drippy and unhealthy, just skip it and move on to a regular cup.
Make sure he drinks while at the table only, just like food, there's no reason to walk around with it.
Take water bottles with you when you're on the go.

I would just take the bottles away. Sounds like you might have to go cold turkey on this one, and let him figure it out. Maybe a sippy that comes with a straw?

I 100% agree with Mamazita. We have never been juice drinkers with any of our kids (we have 6). Milk and water is it. And they could only drink at the table, but we always bring water bottles during outings. Good luck!

I would skip the sippy cup and just teach him to drink from a regular cup, or a cup with a lid and a straw. He's old enough. ETA: I wouldn't worry about him drinking juice. It is not very good for him. He's better off drinking water and milk.

Juice is NOT bad for kids. It's how much you give them. 4oz is a child's serving. And only 1 serving per day.

For an adult it's 8 ounces per day. When you over do anything it's bad for you. If you do it like it's supposed to be done you are just fine.

I agree that he might not like sippy cups. At 21 months he should be using a regular cup anyway. Have you tried the take n toss with the straws? Our kids used those and if they lost them or chewed them up it didn't matter. They are less than fifty cents each.

This is the only kind of cut I would let the kids have a drink in when they were not sitting at the table.

If he really didn't like any sort of nipple except silicone then he is picky and might have some issues later on with different foods. It's not a big deal for them to be picky. He'll eventually outgrow it.

If he's still on the bottle that is also okay. If he isn't holding the bottle in his mouth all night then he's probably not going to have any dental issues from the bottle.

Dixie Cups, my son never touched sippy cups, hated them. He began drinking from 3oz Dixie cups at 1yr old and never looked back. Juice was not drank often and if it was it was watered down greatly.

I never used sippy cups and my kids never drank juice.

At 21 months, please just teach him how to drink out of a cup. There is no need for a sippy.

No juice. Hold him off of juice for as long as possible - all you do by giving him juice is to make a juice addict. He'll stop drinking water and milk and only drink juice.

As for the sippy cup, it just takes patience and trial and error. Let him keep trying all day (or two) and he'll get it.

Eventually, we gave up trying to gently transition from bottle to cup. When my son turned 2, we simply got rid of all the bottles. With no bottles in the house, there was no fall-back option. It only took a day or two of fuss, then it was over.

Juice is not something a kid needs everyday. It is mostly sugar and does not have any special nutritional value. It should be an occasional food, not a routine one. If you want him to have fruit, give him actual pieces of fruit so that he gets the fiber and good stuff too..

I'm in the same boat with my 2 and 3 year olds. But, they will drink anything but milk from their cups. Have you tried other things to drink? Sometimes it has to be something super yummy to get them to try it.

Does he know how to drink out of a straw? I have had a lot of luck with straw cups too. But, again, no milk. It's funny because both of mine have to have latex bottle nipples, but cups don't matter. Good luck and if you figure it out I can't wait to know.

Have you tried cups that have a straw attached. My DD liked those at that age even though she liked sippy cups too. I gave my DD apple juice in the morning and the rest of the day she drank flavored water. Giving her flavored water was the only way I could get her to drink water. Good luck!!
