Sinus Headache After Going to gym...why?

90% of the time I get a sinus headache after going to the gym -- like today. I don't workout hard. I either jog or do minor weight training so I'm not completely exhausting myself at the gym. There are 3 gyms I usually rotate going to depending on the time of day. But I can usually feel my sinus walls swelling about an hour after I go to the gym. Today my sinuses didn't start to swell until 3-4 hours after the gym. I don't want to be a pill popper and take sinus sudafed EVERY day before the gym. I also don't want to become addicted to nasal spray. How can I prevent this? I'm not ready to do one of those nasal cleanses as it scares me, but I do drip a little water in my nostrils during a hot shower to see if that will release my "blocked sinuses". Does anyone know how to prevent this from happening?

What can I do next?

You know, I'm amazed at how much water I have to consume to stay fully hydrated every day, especially with the weather so dry like it's been recently. I know that after I chug a big glass of water (or two) I can instantly feel a difference in my nose. Maybe making an effort to drink more water would help? Good luck!

Maybe it's allergies from the air. I work at a hospital and I always get really stuffed up after being there for a little while. I work 12 hour shifts. I started using claratin and that has seemed to help.

I would try the nasal rinse after you leave. They aren't bad. I do them, and my son does them. I am completely off all allergy meds and haven't had a sinus infection since starting them. He hasn't had ear infections since starting. I was on allergy stuff year round, and the sicknesses were all cold and flu season. It's really no worse than the water you do in the shower. It's pH balanced so it's really mild. I prefer it to the meds, but it is all personal choice. GL!

I think you are so smart not to want to just take pills and medicine everyday and work on finding a way to prevent the problem instead. I take a liquid supplement called VEMMA (Vitamins, Essential Minerals, Mangosteen, and Aloe Vera). A lot of issues like the one you are having stem back to Mineral Deficiencies and can be fixed naturally. The Aloe can also help heal from in the inside out. We started giving this to our kids and they stopped getting sick, so our family started taking it as well. It would be especially great for you as a mom who works out because it will boost your system and ultimately give you sustained energy. Now I stay at home and recommend it to people, the product is only sold by recommendation. I would love to tell you more, I think it could really help you. Hi J., there's nothing "scary" about the sinus rinse. NeilMed makes a great one. . . I've seen it at Walmart, Walgreens etc. I have terrible sinuses and this has just been a lifesaver for me. Easy to use, makes your sinuses feel great. Go for it!

Hi J.,
I can't be sure but I might suggest two things. 1) There may be an odor at the gym that your sinus' find irritating. As an example mine will flair up tremendously if I'm simply around someone who smells of smoke. It's within seconds of being near the smell of smoke..not even the actual cigarette smoke itself but the smell thereof. 2)Be sure to keep yourself hydrated. This is beyond important under any circumstance not just while working out. Sinus conditions often flair up due to lack of water. Hope this helps, God Bless, L.

I would speak to a personal trainer or super athletic friend or you could ask Mamasource, right? :)

It's very common to get a headache from exercising due to lack of salt or sodium in your system. This is especially common for individuals who sweat a lot. A cure is to drink a powerade type of product that has a good balance of sugar, salt, nutrients, etc, once you've started working out, or afterward. My track coach would say to only drink water before working out, and then drink gatorade or juicey things once you're done.

Also I remember a trainer saying some of the good things in bananas (I don't think it was the potassium) help after you work out. That's why I'd say talk to someone experienced in working out because they might have some tricks up their sleeve. Also they may have more info about the headaches. When I get a headache working out it's not a nasal one, but the whole top of my head, so that makes me wonder, but you could try a drink and see if it works. You may have some imbalance in your body and maybe your diet and a daily vitamin could help even it out. I'm definitely not an expert, but I know headaches can be common with exercising. Good luck!

Saline drops are safe and drug free (just water with salt to be at the correct pH for our bodies). Try using them after you work out. And I agree stay well hydrated. (You may want to try a low-cal electrolyte rehydrater like Gatorade - the light one).
If that doesn't help, talk to your doc. He can rule out other stuff.

Nasal cleanses are nothing more then salty water typically and are very safe, effective. On the other post about tonsils out Kimberly even recommended it and does it for her son. I am going to start doing it with my son as it seems to really help her little boy.

I would say make sure you take a steamy shower after working out and help open up the passageways. I wouldn't take anything BEFORE working out as sinus meds can increase your heart rate, not sure you want that while you are doing that with a workout too.
I say do a nasal cleanse before your workout or use saline drops (not addictive and very safe) before you work out. Then take a hot steamy shower right after working out.
Good luck!

Lots of good helps posted on here. My son plays for the Cardinals and if he is not hydrated enough, he gets that bad headache. Stay hydrated before during after.

Do you know a reflexologist? If you can't find one, rub your toes or the tips of your fingers. This is the part of your body that might be blocked. I know reflexology works but don't take my word for it try it for yourself.

Hey J.! I have chronic sinusitis...it's heinous. If you take sudafeds or meds such as that it will make your problems WORSE. I recommend taking Bromelain (you can get at Whole Foods, Vitamin Cottage, etc.). It's a natural supplement from the Pineapple. It breaks down proteins in your body naturally and effectively. If you take on an empty stomach about 2 hours before the gym, I guarantee you'll feel much much better. You must take it on an empty stomach otherwise it will just aid in digestion.

The sinus rinses are great, but it doesn't help me with my congestion and pain. It helps with keeping bacteria out. My sinusitis is way too chronic. My sinuses are teeny tiny and the fluid doesn't even get in to the cavaties it should. I use it when I have colds more than I use it for my sinuses.

Bromelain has seriously has saved my sanity, and kept me from having severe sinus headaches every day of my life!

How much water are you drinking? Make sure you are well hydrated before you go the gym. Just a thought.

There may be perfumes or something in the air at each of the gyms that you are sensitive to. My husband is allergic to perfumes, so he has a hard time going to church (no matter the building) because of the chemicals floating in the air.
