Sinking Sofa Cushions

We have a sleeper sofa in our living room and I hate it, despite the fact that it's rather new. It was our attempt at having a guest room of some sort since the kiddos have all the extra bedrooms upstairs. In any case the seat cushions sink and kind of fall into the bar area where the sleeper mattress is. I'm wondering if any of you have an brilliant solutions because it's driving me nuts. I tried an "as seen on TV" product I found at BB&B but it did not work. Any help?

What can I do next?

My parents would always put a cut sheet of plywood under the cushions. It hid the bar feeling and make it firm again to sit on with out sinking. It may sound tacky... but nobody ever knew it was under there and it made sitting on it comfortable again.

My grandparents used plywood too. It gave the couch a nice firm base and kept you from falling in.

If you truly hate it, sell it on Craigslist and go to Ikea where they have creative and reasonably priced sleeper sofas with style.

It sounds as if it may be broken. The mesh or fabric that holds the cushion part above the sleeper housing may have ripped. If it's rather new like you say, call the shop you got it and see if they have any kind of guarantee for their product. As long as your kids haven't been catapulting themselves off of it, regular use shouldn't have caused the problem. Tell the shop how long you've had it and how dissapointed you are and see what they can do about it.

Good luck!

if you can take the seat covers off and wash them that will really help. other wise find a great smelling fabrise and spray away! for the bar problem i would put a peice of wood over it and see if that helped. not a thin four by two but a wooden board that would cover the seating area completley and put the seats on over it. so you wont feel that bar.

Here is a solution on ehow.com:

I like how you can cut the plywood in horizontal pieces so they can be stored under the cushions when the sofa bed is tucked away. That should help the sagging cushions. I would also sand the plywood.
