I have been writing on here a bit about my son and his acid reflux. My doctor now gave him similac alimentum. I guess it is a perscription formula. He hates it. When I try to give it to him he makes a funny face and pushes it out of his mouth. Are there different perscription formulas that would have a different taste? Any moms try this with their child? Help!

If you are just giving alimentum for reflux, then you really don't need to be on that formula. I would recommend Enfamil AR (similac has a similar formula but I can't remember the name of it now). It has added rice starch to it that will thicken once it makes it to the stomach to help prevent the reflux. Alimentum is more for issues with milk proteins than reflux. I hope this helps!!

my son was diagnosed with GERD at 3wks old. He was prescribed reglan, prevacid and nutramigen with 1/2 tsp of rice cereal (do not try the cereal unless directed by your pedi) and he was doing great, there was little spitting up, no gas and no constipation ;) Just as our life was getting better it so happened that Nutramigen RTU has been discontinued!! and for some reason he does really bad on the powdered one.
So today we started him on Similac Alimentum which is supposed to be same as nutramigen. So far he hasn't had spitt up but he is a little constipated. But I guess it just a matter of letting his tummy get used to it.
I know how difficult it is, So hang in there!!

Hi M.,
Sorry they ALL taste gross...lol. My son is on Neocate and has been since he was 4 months old. What we did is put 1tsp of corn syrup in it. ( Im sure that there will be various beliefs on this.) but i got the ok by a pediatric nutrionist and his pedi. It took him a little bit but soon he started drinking it like a champ. Eventualy we didnt have to put the corn syrup in. Now he is Two and still takes the Neocate with no syrup.
Good luck

We used Alimentum for DS. (BTW this might be covered under your health insurance due to a mandate in MA so it's worth checking). DS didn't like it at first, but he slowly got used to it. Is your son on Zantac as well -- that helped too. We used to flavor DS Grape and that also went a long way in getting him to take it.

You might ask your doc if you could mix his "old" formula and the Alimentum (30/70, 50/50, 70/30) eventally making it to 100% Alimentum to make the transion a bit easier. If I can be of further help, feel free to email me.

Have you tried transitioning him into the new formula? My daughter is on the same formula for stomach issues. She takes 7 oz of formula at a time so when we first started I did 1 scoop of the alimentum and 2 1/2 of the old stuff for a day or two and then I did 2 scoops of the new stuff and 1 1/2 of the old stuff for a few days and finally all of the alimentum. She transitioned fine into it, so if you haven't tried that, I would give it a shot. Good luck!

I am using alimentum to my son, he is on this formula from 2 months.. he used to have terrible gas, so started giving him alimentum.. this is a great formula.. he never had gas issues after that... but as he is 4 months now.. he wont take alimentum due to taste... he dont like it.. but when he is hungry he takes a some of it.. so wait until he is hungry and feed them. i have tried and searched internet for flavors but nothing seem to have worked.
If any one have tried anything please let me know..

My baby took Gentlease Lipil and that seemed to work out. It is not prescription (neither is the other one. If you have your doctor write it as a prescription (even though it is over the counter) most insurance companies will pay for it. My baby got FREE Gentlease Lipil thru the pharmacy. Call your insurance company and ask if you have a formula benefit! There was NO Co-Pay! I got ONE YEAR FREE formula. Even if your insurance does not want to cover it I would still recomend the Gentlease.

Hi M.,

If all else fails, I'd suggest a prescription for human milk. It would be less expensive if you knew someone who could provide this for your son.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_milk_banking_in_North_... Only suggestion I can think of since I'm not familiar with formulas. I hope your son finds something he is able to enjoy.

Good luck,
: ) Maureen

My son tried this to and hated it as well. We tried everything out there and finally tried a homemade goats milk formula which worked great but didn't have the proper nutrition. on a whim we decided to go and get an organic formula. Baby's Only Organic formula Dairy was a God send. You can buy it at Whole Foods or order by the case on-line. It was really wonderful. The spitting up didn't completly stop but the pain did. Within a day of being on the organic we were off all acid reflux meds. Beware that not all organics are equal, baby's only is really good and all natural no corn syrup or synthetics.
Have you had a GI ultrasound done of your son's belly? There is a condition called Pyloric Stenosis which effects 1:100 kids, mostly boys, where the pyloric muscle is to tight. They go in surgically and loosen it.
Good luck!

I ended up using Nutramigen for my son with his acid reflux and he liked it and it worked. Not cheap though! If by chance you have Massachusetts based health insurance, have your doctor write a script for it and the insurance will pay for it!! If you a Rhode Island based insurance holder, you are out of luck.

Good luck!!
