Has anyone experienced major side effects from changing their birth control pill? After I had my son and was nursing, my OB put me on a low-estrogen pill. My cycle never got back to normal, and so this last month, my regular internist changed the dosage. I never got my period last month, and for the last 3-4 weeks (same timeframe as the pill change), I've had pain on my lower right back that comes around the front, sometimes feeling 'crampy'. I took a PG test just to be sure, but it was negative. My chiropractor thinks it could be related, but it may also be a pulled muscle that's very deep. Theoretically, I should get my period this week since I'm on the placebo week, but nothing so far. Has anyone had a similar issue?
My major side effect from switching BC pills was a pregnancy with twins. :) This was not after breastfeeding or giving birth, just before my Mommy-days. At the time I was told it could take up to 3 months for your body/cycles to adjust. If it were me I would wait it out a little longer. And use a condom. :)
depending on the birth control pill, some make you have less flow and some make your period disappear entirely. I am normally irregular but I have had my experience with all types. I currently have an Mirena and I am all kinds of messed up from it. It takes awhile for your body to get used to extra horomones. If you do not like it talk to your dr and have it changed to something else.
I'm curious about this too. I went on the 3-month pill almost a year ago, and now instead of getting really heavy periods every three weeks, I get virtually NOTHING, EVER! Not even in the placebo week. It's great, but that can't be good for me, right?
My thought regarding the pain is a cyst or an endometrioma which is a blood filled cyst related to endometriosis.
If it is a cyst or an endometrioma, it may get worse so keep an eye on it.

When my OBGYN put me on a low estrogen pill, I had "spotting" the first month, and from that point on I pretty much don't have a period each month. (Occasional spotting otherwise nothing.) I even called them to make sure it was normal, and they assured me that it is with this type of low estrogen pill. I've even taken "spot" PG tests to make sure since there will be no spotting or anything for over a month, and sometimes with symptoms, but still no spotting. I can't say that I miss getting a peroid, but still can be worry some when you expect it and it never comes.
I have had similar problems. I switched methods from regular pills to seasonale to a nuva ring and back to regular pills after my son was born. He is now 2 1/2 and my hubby got a vasectomy so I have been birth control free since January of this year. My cycle has never gotten regular through the whole thing. I miss several periods in a row, never got a period while on pills since I had my son and now still miss several cycles in a row. I occasionally have pain (usually before I would except a period) roughly where my ovaries are. My obgyn says it is a harmless cyst (pretty common) and if not really painful not worth doing anything with at this time. The irregular cycles she attributes to hormonal levels. After you have a baby your levels may never return to what they used to be and your body adjusts to a new "normal". I don't know if this helps at all but you are not alone with this problem.

I had a few problems with the pill. I tried to go on one that was all progesterone...that was horrible for me. I cried constantly. I just stopped and threw them out then I felt fine and we just used condoms. Then i began feeling pain (severe 7 cm dilated waiting for an epidural type pain). After this happened two months in a row while on my period i went in for and ultrasound and they were actually able to see a cyst. I would talk to your doctor for the pain you are having as it could be a cyst. They may not be able to see it with an ultrasound though. They were never able to see my mothers. it'll probably depend on your cycle. I think they caught the remnants of mine. When you feel the pain it is because it has burst releasing the fluid which is then absorbed into your body. I went Ortho-Novum 777 which is what i used pre-baby days but that was good for my hormones anymore...again with the crying and being emotional. It took a few tries to find one that fit my body well. I now take Mircette which has low dose hormones for 3 weeks then it steps down for the first 2 days of week 4 then 5 days of an even lower dose for the rest of week 4 (week 4 is when you should have your period). The flow is now fairly light to medium except for blood clots. fun times there. And my cysts have subsided. Good luck. I hope you find something that works. It can take a few months for your body to adjust though.
I would call your OBGYN and let them know where the pain is... I had something similar happen and found out that I had an ovarian cyst. It may not be the case but after I had my daughter and went on BC I started to get them (every 3 months). As I said this may not be your case but call your OBGYN and ask them... if you go in they might give you an ultrasound to see if you have a cyst or not.
Exact same thing happened to me when my OBGYN changed my pills after I had my daughter. I've been skipping periods and having really light periods that seriously last like an hour and thats it. My pharmacist just switched my pills last month, and still waiting to see if it helps.
My advice is this: if you don't mind the chance of getting pregnant (which even on the pill there is that chance....happened to our friends....) go the natural route. NO SIDE EFFECTS WITH THAT!!!!!!! You are most fertile around day 14 so just avoid sex between days 10 and 20 (to be super safe.)
