Sickness That Won't Quit

I have a 3yr old boy who has seriously had a fever/runny nose/vomiting off and on for a month. He is fine for a few days maybe even a week with nothing then all of a sudden he has a fever again. He doesn't go to daycare but does play with other kids all the time. I know kids get sick but how often is too often? I'm worried. I take him to the dr and all they say is if he's not lethargic or dehydrated then he just has a virus. I just don't get how he could be sick so often. It breaks my heart to see him feeling bad or throwing up. I'd love to hear if any other child has gone through this or if it's not normal and I should be asking for different tests or something.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I want to thank everyone who sent advice. Weird as it is he woke up today perfectly fine. No fever and ate 3 bowls of cereal for breakfast and has been munching and drinking water all day. I just don't know, this go around it must have just been a 24hr bug. I will take the advice that if it happens again within the next few days I'm taking him to another doctor. Thanks again everyone. I appreciate all your help!

Has there been a chest x-ray. It may be walking Pneumonia. My son had it, he had on and off fever, very tired, and threw up. It took him about a month to get over it. My son's chest sounded fine but the emergency room doctor did the xray just to be safe. Good thing because it was pnuemonia. My doctr too blew it off as a virus but his temp got to be 103 one night so I took him to the hospital. Good luck.

Do take him in, I am sure it may be allergies to something, but also notice if eating and drinking are off...is he drinking lots and lots of water? Is he peeing frequently? In the case of infection, is it his ears, eyes,...any pain? My son complained of headaches, but we thought it was his eyes..he did need glasses. Eventually he was diagnosed diabetic but not until it was almost too late. He had good days and bad for six months before we were able to get him diagnosed, and that was only because we saw a doctor that had experience with the visible symptoms. Mention it and maybe they will do a sugar test. (Its just a finger prick). The three bowls of cereal and stuff is something of a worry for me, because my son did the same thing before he was diagnosed. He'd literally eat himself sick..and then the next day not be able to hardly eat at all, even though he WAS hungry, and you could tell because he would try to eat..but would say he was full. Then he had to "go potty" after every little sip of liquid. For two years we put up with habitual bed wetting before all the other stuff even started. Doctors didn't say anything. It took our dog..a large very protective and highly attached to "his boy" dog to make us understand it was a deadly fight he was having with his own body. The smell eventually got us..rotten fruit. Bad breath no matter what..even right after brushing, it smelled through the fresh toothpaste etc. I really don't want to scare you but if this has been going on for a month its time to take him somewhere and not leave until you get answers. My son suffered bravely for six months, through eight doctors..and it was our DOG that ended up being the diagnoser, and the doctor just confirmed his diagnosis. Thank goodness for small favors because we wouldn't have a son if we hadn't believed our dog more than all those doctors. We got lucky that the doc that we finally got to see knew exactly what the smell was. (And told us to give that dog a bone..and we did..actually I think he got like three big ones that day!) Its easy to deal with once you know what it is. Diagnosed young, people live very productive and healthy lives if its caught early. If there is any history at all in either dad's or your families you should look into it...Good Luck!

Hi A.,

If he actually has a fever and is vomiting - it is very important to take him to his pediatrician. A fever (even if it is intermittant) for a month or more isnt normal and is usually caused by an ongoing infection. Vomiting can cause him to become dehydrated.

I think you need to follow your instincts and see another doctor if you feel something is wrong. Don't let them just blow you off, be persistant. I think I would accept the explanation that its a virus the first week, but after that they need to try a little harder to figure out what is really going on. I'm sure I would be worried too if I were you. My daughter is almost 2 and she has only had one illness where she was throwing up and it was terrible seeing her like that. It doesn't seem normal where this would be happening off and on for a month.

You are not wrong to worry. It's best to rule out anything rather than ignore it. If he is still sick now, I would take him to a different doctor immediately. If he is ok right now, you may want to wait and if it starts again, for even one day, then go to a doctor. If you don't know what other doctor to go see, my daughter and my nieces go to a pediatrician in Federal Way who is great. He's very thorough which is what I like. If you would like a recommendation, please feel free to email me. ____@____.com Luck and I hope your son is fine.

I had a niece go through something very similar, and it was food allergies. She was much younger, though (like around 1), and it cleared up after a few months. For a while, though, she was off any milk and wheat products.

I wonder if a second opinion from a different doc might be in order?

I would get the advice of another doctor or maybe see a naturopath. Maybe he has a food allergy you don't know about. This doesn't seem right to me either. good luck. M.

My nephew had those problems - sinus and ill occasionally throwing up for over a year. I told my sister he was probably dairy intolerant. Sure enough, dairy, soy and egg white allergies. Allergies can manifest the symptoms you described. Check for food allergies.

Perhaps monitor carefully what he is eating. Something may not be agreeing with his system, and his body is purging it out.

May Father look upon your son with favor, and grant you wisdom on how to care for him in sickness, and strengthen his health. Blessings to your family. In Yeshua's (Jesus) name, Amein.

I have two daughters, now 14 and 12, but when my youngest was 2-3, I worked for a large daycare chain. She was always sick! As soon as she went off of an antibiotic, she would have green nastiness pouring out of her precious little nose again! Her sinuses became so backed up that she had grossness coming (literally) out of her eyes! Poor baby! Since she was never free from the yucky nose, I assumed that she had allergies. However, I got a nanny share job where I could take her with me, and the nose was fine. As sick as my little girl was, she has been fine ever since. One other thing that has changed is that I am feeding my family healthier foods. I keep experimenting to find good, healthy food that they enjoy. For example, they were not too fond of wheat pasta, but they do like brown rice pasta, (thus avoiding white flour.) I have a daycare in my home now, and even the little ones like the things I make. I make wheat bread in my bread machine, and they like that, too. I have also noticed that whatever fruits and veggies I cut up and set out on the table eventually get eaten. It's good for all of us! You sound like a wonderful, caring Mama. Ghabriel is blessed to have you for his Mother. I will be praying for him, too. <3

A., as I understand it, viruses usually run their course in adults in about 1-2 weeks, and for small kids it is doubled, so 2-4 weeks.

Last winter my two kids had some type of stomach flu, our 1 yr old daughter was better in about 1-2 weeks, but our son, who was 2.5 yrs at the time, just couldn’t seem to get over it. He’d be sick and vomiting, then he’d feel better and be starving, so he’d beg for milk. I’d give him milk and he’d start vomiting again. In retrospect, I realized that I was giving him dairy products too soon. Finally, when he felt better and was hungry, I did not give him anything that could irritate his digestive system for 2 additional days once the vomiting stopped. After that he was fine.

So, as the other mom’s have said, definitely get a second opinion. In the meantime, perhaps try only watered down juice and crackers/pasta for a couple of days after the symptoms cease to see if the digestive system needs some time to recover.

Good luck

I would take him to a different doctor or request that they test him for something (food allergies, etc). I have 3 kids and that has never happened. The closest experience I have to this is one time one of my boys had a cold that was back to back but his dr said if it didn't clear up within a week then bring him back. Good luck.
