Hi My twins are 18 months old and are getting over a really bad cold. My dd is still coughing and has a runny nose. My ds actually had to be on 2 diff antibiotics and is still coughing a little. Is it safe for them to go outside in this cold weather or should I wait till they are closer to 100%? I'm more worried about my dd because she hasn't had to be on antibiotics and I don't want her to get worse but I feel so bad for keeping them in......
Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We ended up staying in yesterday. They took 2 long naps. They woke up today so refreshed and so much better than yesterday! So we went to music class and played outside! Thank you all so much for the advice!!!!

Kids don't get sick from being outside. They get sick from being inside with other sick kids! Other than being so cold that they get frostbite, what could possibly happen if they are outside in the fresh air? If they are feverish, you don't want to over-bundle them, but as long as it's not so bitter cold that their coughing gets aggravated, there's absolutely nothing wrong or negative about them being outside!! Go out and enjoy!!

The "brain" side of me says that getting sick has nothing to do with weather, it's about germs and bacteria. The "mom" side of me though thinks- why risk it?

Give them a few more days of indoor play b/c you don't want them with an on-going cold throughout the winter! Build forts with pillows, let them "paint" with water, fill up the tub (while steaming out their noses) and let them splash around for a while. A few more days won't hurt them!

The cold doesn't give people colds - germs do. If they feel good enough to be up and about, send them outside. I think that the sun and fresh air often helps me feel better.

Do be prepared for a snot factory, though. The cold will make their noses run more (but it won't make them sicker, just messier).

Keep them inside. Explain it will help them get better faster and ask them to help plan a family outing to make up for the missed play time. But, remember what you do now, dictates the future, you don't want them or anyone else saying, well you let them go outside when they were sick before. Don't set yourself up to play defense. Mom knows best!!! :o)

yes we all know that cold doesn't make us sick germs do - but there has been a lot of evidence that lowering our bodies core temperatures causes our resistance to diseases to be compromised. In fact mayo clinic recently did a big study on this by taking individuals who are already sick with a cold, and putting some of them in a regular heated room, and some of them in a cold room, and the cold room people took longer to get better - usually old wives tales have some truth to them - it it is very cold outside and your kids are sick - keep them warm

I would keep them inside if it were my kids. Being out in the cold will lower their chances of gettting better faster. Sad that they cant go outside and play but you dont want them to get sicker or take longer to get better. Faster they get better, faster they can go back out and play. I would just make inside more fun. Just be creative. Make macaroni pictures, or play with clay. Color, or even paint. Make popcorn and hot cocoa. Just have fun inside and keep them warm.

If they're bundled up and toasty inside their snowsuits, I'd take them out for a little bit.

I always want to keep my kids in and snuggle them when they are sick with colds but my husband trys to keep normal routine and take them outside to play. I will admit the fresh air will do them good. In the winter germs are in the house and we don't get outside often enough for fresh air! I say let them out, enjoy the weather:) The air is dry outside though so make sure to have humidifier on inside the house to keep things moist.

I think a little fresh air will be good for them, maybe just a half hour or so? No temps right? Sun is FINALLY shining in my corner of NY today!
