Because he is SO young and a newborn, you should take him to the Doctor.... to see what is going on.
Do not give, a newborn over the counter things. Their kidneys, cannot handle it nor process it.
my 10 day old son has developed a stuffy/runny nose and a cough. what could be wrong and can i treat it at home?

I agree with the other moms..he is waaay too little and alot can go wrong. I would first call the "nurse on call" and tell her the little ones symptoms. She will probably want him to come in. I assume he had a 1 week check up...was he ok then?
I always say, its better to be safe than sorry..just call the doc....the copay is worth not worrying.
The cough is concerning - many new borns can get congested. Call the doctor and you will catch it early - or be reassured it's something simple. Take Care,
Is he breast fed? If not start over and breast feed him. He won't get sick for a year.
If you are breast feeding you have to go to a pediatric doctor. You need help.
Same for a formula fed baby. They are far too delicate at this stage in life to go it alone.
my little guy got congested around this time too and the doctor had me use a saline solution. He wasn't to concerned about the congestion. He does cough every once in a while, but it's more so after he eats if he eats it to fast. I would be more concered about the cough honestly.
My daughter at seven weeks had RSV. We are about to hit spring time and many children in my Colorado are has been hospitalized with RSV. My two year old was dagnosed with bronchilitis. My spelling may be very bad I have seem to cought my kids colds also. Because she has had RSV before the doc said she may get bronchilitis more than normal and she has a few times. Here is a web site from the cdc.

Sometimes babies are just getting use to their new environment out of the womb.
I would take him to the doctor, but in the meantime, just keep him upright as much as possible and use a humidifier if you have one. Poor little guy!
If it was just congestion I would use a saline spray and let him sleep in the bouncer chair or car seat to help , but the cough in a newborn is not good , so I would check with the Dr.
