Hi everyone my almost 2 yr old (april) has been coughing, runny nose since monday. He hasnt been eating good at all wont try pudding, jello yogurt nothing just wants to play with it all. I took him to the urgent care last night and he gave me medicine for his cough. I couldnt really ask him any questions he was in and out quick. He said all he had was a cold. So what could i do about his eating? He hasnt eaten good in 4 days going on the fifth. Ive tried top ramen which he loves but nope wont eat it. Help I need some suggestions.

What can I do next?

It makes sense that he isn't interested in eating. He probably has no taste and/or smell. Try some chicken or beef broth (home - made is best) in a sippy cup or bottle (whichever you are using). Remember that he's experiencing a cold like you do... not wanting to eat or drink due to stuffiness and not being able to taste or smell. You can also try Pedialite if you are concerned about his electrolytes and hydration. If this is just a cold, it should pass in 7 to 10 days. If it goes longer than that, take him into his doctor. Also, try a humidifier in his room at night to help him breathe.

Hope this helps! :)

He just needs fluids. Our digestive system drains us when it has to work and his body is trying to heal thus signaling "no appetite" for good reason.

When my little guy is sick he doesn't eat much at all- liquids and some fruit, but not much else. Just offer some of his favorite, but "non scratchy" foods and if he eats, great. If not, know that when he's feeling better he'll be back to himself!

Popsicles. Make some from fruit, yogurt, water, other stuff. Get creative. When my kids are sick I give them Popsicles and its like a gateway food. They realize how hungry they are.

I wouldn't worry about his eating.
When sick, even I don't want to eat.

BUT, you should be concerned about dehydration.
That is worse, than not eating.
A child can get dehydrated quickly.

Make sure he stays hydrated.
Not with soft drinks.
Water.
Soups

Orange juice when sick, will create more mucus. So stay away from orange juice when sick.

girl i feel ya', my S.'s had strep ALL week, so you know he hasn't eaten! but, he's still alive...he's made it! it's okay. it really looks and sounds worse than it is, but i've always been told they'll eat when they're hungry, even when they're being brats (my kiddo sometimes) or when they're sick, like in our situation right now. i hope he feels better soon. it's okay mama. :)

If he is congested/nose stopped up with the runny nose maybe he can't breath and eat at the same time. Like the other mommas said, just make sure he stays hydrated with lots of fluids and it will pass where he will start getting his appetite back. I have heard rubbing Vicks on the bottom of their feet will help with a cough. You might try googling this to be sure...

My 3 yo is sick with cold, cough and a sinus infection. When he's sick he hardly eats, so when he does I try to make it substantial. But the other posts are right. Keep him hydrated. Make some chicken noodle soup (better when home made) with fun spiral or bow tie noodles so he's interested. The broth is the important part, but if he eats the "stuff" in it then that's a bonus!

I was just at the doctor today w/ my sick S. and said that he didn't seem to be eating well either. She said give him Pedialyte just so he's getting some of those electrolytes and keep him hydrated. We bought some Gatorade just b/c I know he'll drink it and Pedialyte is sooooo expensive?! So, keeping him hydrated and even add pedialyte? Try some yogurt too? My S. just drank some of those Danimals yogurt... better than nothing! Good luck!

You don't need to worry about food when kids are sick in nearly all cases (exemptions include those who are 'failing to thrive', diabetic, etc.). You need to worry about pushing FLUIDS... but the digestion system actually shuts down when ANY of us are sick (the body sends the energy digestion takes to the immune system).

He's 2.... so just make sure he's having juice and soup (just the liquid, not the solid) in his sippy cups in addition to water. High fat and high protein from the soup base will help his immune system build antibodies, the sugar helps the brain function (the brain ONLY uses pure sugar as it's energy source)
