My 1 and a half year old daughter woke up Wednesday morning with a fever of 101.5. I took her to the Dr. that morning and they said it just must be some sort of virus and we would need to let it run it's course. by that afternoon her fever was up to 103 and was 102.7 the next morning. Thursday afternoon and evening she didn't have a fever so I thought she was getting over it. Then on Friday morning her fever was back up to 103.7! I called the Dr. and they wanted to see her again. They tested her for Strep, RSV, the flu and even x-rayed her lungs but didn't find anything so just confirmed it was a bad virus that needs to run it course. Luckily she got up Saturday morning with no fever, but is now extremely cranky (even with the fever the days before she would still run around and play) and wants me to be right by her side while she's playing or doing whatever. This morning I noticed small red bumps on her face, neck, scalp, chest and back. They don't seem to bother her and she's not scratching them. Has anyone else experienced anything like this. Just not sure how worried I should be about this rash? I'll be calling the Dr. in the morning of course. I know I'm probably just being over-worried and paranoid, but this is the sickest my daughter has ever been. We've only dealt with colds and a couple ear infections before!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the great advice! Roseola seems to be what is was - I read up on it and it fits her symptoms to a tee. Her rash was already pretty much gone this morning, so I didn't bother to call the Dr. After picking her up this afternoon the rash was gone completely - thank goodness! Thanks again!

My daughter often gets a bumpy rash after a virus. I was told that it is a "viral rash" and that many kids get it at the tail end of a virus. My girls always want extra attention and cuddles after being sick, it should lessen in time. Good Luck.

My guess is that she has/had roseola. My oldest son had it when he was about 2. It usually is a high fever and then a rash throughout the body that is not itchy. If I were you, I would still contact your doctor just to make sure that it's nothing else. I remember being just as scared when my son was going through the same thing... Not fun at all! Best of luck. I hope everything turns out just fine! :)

my daughter has had this too...her pediatrician told us the rash was due to the virus, and was indication of the tail end of it and not to worry too much about it. this is just our dr, if you feel worried you should call your pediatriciation!...in my experience, you can never be too paranoid when your child is sick, especially with very young children as your daughter...i sure hope she feels better very soon!!

Yes, that is a viral rash. Every single time my son got sick as a baby with a high fever caused by a virus, he always ended up with that fine (little bumps) red rash. It would always cover his back, arms, and chest, and sometimes his face. I think that is quite common for babies to get that with a high fever and a virus.

The rash is more than likely from the fact that your child had such a high fever for days. My children often do this as well. If it makes you feel better, call your doctor. No mother should sit around and worry when a phone call is all it takes.

sounds like the beginning of chicken pox but i have no idea. Sometimes lil immune systems can act strangely to all sorts of different things and maybe this weird rash is just that..a weird rash..her body saying that it is sick. try not to worry too much about it. I wanted to tell you this our sons ped said that if they run a high fever and you need to get it under control to sprinkle a towel with water and wrap it around them...it zaps the fever right out! Our son is still recovering from pneumonia so we just finished go9ing through all of this and that was the sickest our son had ever been. Hang in there!!

It's the body's reaction to the high fever. Every time my son has had a high fever due to a virus, he gets this rash. My ped told me to expect it and not to worry. Hope she feels better soon.

My daughter had a RSV last month. It took an ER visit to confirm it. The virus/fever itself seem to last about a week. However the symptoms like coughing and weezing is still lingering on. I never had any problems with red bumps; Its been almost a month but she is thankfully on the better side of the hill. My suggestion is to keep your baby on Motrin/Tylonel to control the fever and any pain issues she is having and then go to your Ped tomorrow. She should be fine. If the bumps are not bothering her, then I wouldnt worry about them for today. ask the doc in the morning.
Good luck

It sounds like heat rash I got them when I was pregnant and the weather was warm I get it when I have a fever too. Just lower the thermostat a coulpe degrees and dress her lightly because she is your little koala her body heat is trapped between you and doesn't get to escape a few cold compresses or lukewarm bath should help the spots will fade as she gets better.wish you and your little one well and remember your just doing your job and nevermind the cranky docs

Could have been roseola. Once the child breaks out in a rash, he/she usually feels lots better and the rash doesn't last very long.

It sounds like the roseola virus. My daughter had the same thing around the same age. The classic symptoms are running the fever for a few days and soon after the fever breaks the rash breaks out. You can check it out on WebMD and other sites if you would like more info on it, but basically it is as the dr. said, it will just have to run it's course. My ped. told me that the virus stays dorment in their body and can reoccur whenever their immune system is down until about age 4. It has proved true for us...she has had the same thing about 3 times since, but she turned 4 in July so here's to hoping we won't have to deal with it anymore! I have two other daughters younger than her and neither one caught it from her either time fortunately!! Good luck! Hope DD feels better soon!

It sounds like roseola to me. My daughter had it when she was 1 as well. The rash does not come out until after the fever breaks and I believe it is viral. I would give her some tylenol for the discomfort of the virus and if she is not better by Monday call the doctor again.
