...sick Baby. - Austin,MN

My ten month old daughter has had a fever (between 102 and 104.5) for the four days prior to today...today she did not have the fever, but I have never, EVER seen her so fussy. I mean, pretty much inconsolable.

I had her to the ped. on Wed, and they had me send in a stool sample to test for rotovirus and something else, which came back negative. She has had diarrhea for weeks, it seems, but again, today, she had none (just like no fever!)

Really, it's almost the way she was acting before we figured out she was allergic to dairy (passed through my milk) but this was FAR more severe...I don't know if she could possibly be allergic to something else, if it is teething (because I neither see nor feel teeth, really), or what?

She is sleeping peacefully now, but today was just awful. I mean, I thought she was going to give herself whiplash at a few points the way she was throwing her head, and she kept wanting to bang her head into the couch and chair while she was crying. I just don't know!

Also, it seems like I can totally see what would be molars bulging from her gums in the back? THey haven't cut through, but her gums seem very swollen there, and you can see the outline of the teeth. Has anyone's baby cut back teeth before any others?

Sorry to be so sporadic with this question...her doctor was out of the office today, and I'll be taking her in tomorrow, but I'm just wondering if there is something I am not thinking of! I have tried everything, and I'm afraid she will be this upset tomorrow as well. Obviously, something hurts...or feels awful...I just don't know!

***Oh, and more important that the last question I asked, which was just me being "ridiculous" and ranting about something that's upset me. I'll get over it. I guess I didn't think about that...I'm going to change the question title now!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I should further state that I had her in yesterday, and that it isn't an ear infection. My oldest had frequent ear infections, and I literally had chronic ear infection (one a month, at least) until I was 12 years old. I know how miserable they are, but I just don't think it's an ear infection (plus, we've ruled that out.) Thanks for the ideas though...that's really what I am looking for, are ideas for what this could be that I might suggest to her doctor. It seems like sometimes unless you say "hey, could it be this?" they don't do a whole lot.

Oh, also...definitely not dehydrated, has plenty of wet diapers. She has never actually cried tears (neither did my oldest...weird, huh?) but anyhow...also, appetite is TERRIBLE. Doesn't want any foods, not even a cookie! (Oh yes, I tried to bribe with a cookie, and I am SO not ashamed...but poor baby didn't even want a cookie!) and also, doesn't really want to nurse.

Ear infection and teething are common. Hylands teething tablets help and motrin will help either to get you through the night. But I'd call the dr. or go to the ER if the fever spikes over 104 and you can't get it down with motrin or tylenol. My kids have had ear infections that didn't show up at the first dr. visit we were back in a few days only for the dr. find it the second time around.

Sometimes I think it is just as hard on us mommies when the baby is sick! Hang in there.

Honestly if the fever is still there I would take her to the ER in case it is meningitis. Any time there is unconsolable crying with a fever you will want to eliminate that. Or, it could be a bad ear infection. I am sorry, it is so horrilbe when your baby who cannot communicate is crying and in pain. Good luck mama.

Is she still crying tears? If she stops or not enough wet diapers (I think it's 8 hours without) then I'd take her straight to er. Or if her temp goes back up to 104 during the night. If it was my baby I would take her back in tomorrow just to make sure it's not her ears now or something else. Poor baby and mom! Hope she's feeling better soon!

My son will all of a sudden act very grumpy or clingy when he gets an ear infection. This sounds like what happened with my son. He usually doesn't pull on his ear or get a fever like some. Once he did and it was 101-104 for three days. We went to the doctor and it was an infection.
His first ear infection he was just very clingy. We went to the doctor, saw nothing and sent us home. A day later he was acting even worse, so I took him back in, this time they used an air puffy thing and saw that his ear was in fact infected.
If you couldn't tell, I think it's an ear infection. . . . plus almost all of my sons infections history.

Has the pediatrician tested her for urinary tract infection. My daughter had a run of fevers (101-103) when she was little and I went in to the doctor's office on 3 separate occasions. She was inconsolable and while Tylenol reducted the fever it never completely went away. The doctor said it was uncommon in kids as young as she was but possible and they tested her urine and sure enough she had a bladder infection. She also had some diarrhea but the fever can cause that as well.

What do you mean, "On a more important note"? More important than what?

Regarding sick baby - It sounds like teething. Fever and diarrhea go hand in hand w/ teething.

My kids really, really struggled with teeth--very fussy, and occasional fevers. But...my kids never went up to 104 with teeth, and their fevers would come and go over the course of the day, without meds. I would say a constant, high fever like that is not teeth. I don't know much else, but my daycare said we had some of the worst teethers she's seen--and my kids were not THAT sick with teeth.

not sure where you live, but there has been a rampant case of Influenza B in the midwest. we live in Iowa, but have several friends in other states that have seen it elsewhere. It has super high fevers of about 104 and lasts 5-7 days. There is nothing Dr's office can do for it, but i would google influenza B. You could get more information on symptoms. Some kids have also had strep (most at least have a very sore throat with it). And many kids have been throwing up. My daughter only had fever, but several of her friends were not so lucky. it's highly contagious for several days. The flu shot would not have helped for this, it is actually an intestinal bug of some sort. we take several vitamins that made my daughter's sickness duration lessen considerably. You can get them all at healthfood store. Vitamin D drops. Wonderful for children, super for immune system! Vitamin C. Elderberry is a wonderful one, you can get it in a syrup. Remember to let the fevers go until they get to about 101-102 degrees. That's their bodies natural defense system kicking in. good luck. hope you find out what this is. bless you mommy!

Good morning, mrslavallie! I went through something similar with my girls at that age, and I took them to their ped thinking it was an ear infection but it was a teething thing. The pain from the gums was just radiating to their ears so they were thrashing and rubbing their ears and just generally inconsolable. He gave them a liquid pain reliever that would help them sleep. This pain medicine isn't recommended for a congested baby because it would make the baby sleep too deeply and baby wouldn't be able to cough productively like they're supposed to, so be careful. Check it out. I also gave them beef jerky because it doesn't fall apart and keeps them biting so those stubborn teeth come through. Good luck and I hope she gets some relief, poor baby. It's a miserable time for both of you.
