Sick and Teething

This is my first baby. She is 5 months old now. She is teething and I believe that is what is waking her up at night. She was sleeping thru the night with no problems. Now, I am lucky if she only wakes up once. If I put her in the bed with us, she will go back to sleep and be fine. If I put her back in her crib....she will wake up again. I just realized this this past weekend. I have never let her sleep with us and only did cause she was not feeling well. Any ideas or fixes for the next sleepless nights ahead of me?

What can I do next?

I agree with Holly. Try tylenol at the last minute before bed. If that doesn't help I would have her ears checked just in case. Many times I thought my youngest was teething and normally he was but a few times it was an ear infection that woke him up at night. He never had fever with the ear infections either...just the usual teething symptons and/or a runny nose and the waking at night. I hope she feels better soon so you can both get a good nights rest!

I co-slept with my son until he was about 8 months. Around 6 months, we put him down in his crib, but he ended up in our bed, similar to you.

It was a phase that we just stuck with, but then, I realized I was settling him into a habit of sleeping with me in a time when he needed to learn to self sooth. Around 6-8 months is a good ltime to let them cry it out.

Sometimes, the best thing to do, is go in there and rub her back or belly and sing them a song, without picking her up, or turning on the lights... It will help her learn to fall asleep in her own surrounding. (Often, babies go to sleep fine, but they wake up startled by the surroundings and need to learn to be able to put themselves asleep again.)

Also, if teething is the problem, try giving her some baby Orajel when she wakes up crying, or a frozen teething ring to help her feel better as she goes back to sleep.

Good luck, it wil pass!

Try giving her Tylenol right before bed. It helped my son when he was teething.

H.,

I have an 8 month old baby girl that I let sleep with me. I decided about a week ago to start putting her in her crib. She screamed !! I read an article tha basically said they have to be trained. It says to create a sleeptime routine. So, I lay her in her crib and turn on the same CD everynight. She screamed for about 20 minutes the first nigt and it has gotten better every night. Last night she maybe cried fo 45 seconds and then went to sleep. It will get eaier every night!!
