So What Happened?

I would like to THANK all the MOTHERS that responded to my question about my ''sick 18 month old''. To let everyone know that the little man is doing much better. The ginger ale did the trick but just cause he was so weak I still took him to Joe Dimaggo PEDS E.R. all tests came negative. A IV was ran and we were sent home, where he is now back to running the hold house as usually. THANKS A GREAT DEAL TO ALL U SUPERMOMS.......;-)

What Malia B said. Their tummy needs a bit of time to "recover" from the vomiting. Then it can only handle very little. My son had a bug last year and he couldn't keep anything down for a bit, but when I switched to the little bit every 10 minutes after waiting, it stayed down.

I actually used one of those medicine syringes so I could measure the amounts, plus he liked pushing the plunger to give it to himself, LOL.

At this point, don't give him anything... nothing to drink for at least 30 minutes.... the source below actually says 1 hour....

Don't try to get him to eat..... he won't be able to keep it down....

At that point, give him ice chips or a popsicle to suck on... that will provide some fluids.

If he can keep that down, just give him small amounts of water.... a tablespoon or two in a cup, every 10 minutes or so...

If he continues to be able to keep that down, just keep that up.

Does he have a fever? If not, it sounds like a virus and unfortunately, you will have to ride it through. Offer liquids. If he throws up after it, wait 1/2 an hour before you offer liquids again. this will go on about 24 hours and it will slowly subside. Keep on hand pedialyte, pedialyte frozen pops, ginger ale, coke or gatorade. No water. It is important to keep him hydrated with just the above listed. The frozen pedialyte pops work really well! When you see that he is keeping down the fluids, begin with a piece of toast. If he keeps that down, introduce clear broth with toast. I know it stinks, but that's why we are Super Moms. Good luck.

This is the worst. I would go out and get some pedialyte. They sell little powdered drink mix packets that taste way better than the regular stuff. I did actually try them all b/c my kid kept complaining that they tasted horrible, so I checked it out. ;)

Giving him only water could make the vomiting worse. A nurse told me to never give just plain water after there has been vomiting. I do give my kids gatorade now b/c the Pedialyte just isn't working for us anymore, but your baby is so young, maybe he'll drink it. There are also Pedialtye popsicles that aren't too bad either. In fact, any popsicle is fine as long as it's been a while since he's thrown up. I would wait at least an hour. My ped's office usually tells me to wait 4 hours after vomiting before giving anything, which I know is a long time but they need the time to recover.

why is he vomiting? Does he have fever? Earache? Tummy problems? If he doesn't have other symptoms that suggest a virus why not call your pediatrician and talk to them?

Seeing your thread after-the-fact - glad to know he's alright! One thing you might consider getting to put in your medicine cabinet is suppositories to help bring fever down. My son woke up throwing up one morning, and it got so bad that he laid down in front of the toilet. The ped's office had said to have him sip on an ounce of water or ginger ale every 15 minutes, but he'd keep throwing it up.

The ped told me that his fever was contributing to his vomiting, so if we could get his fever down, it might stop the vomiting. So she had me get the fever suppositories and I went by her instructions over the phone. I explained everything to my son, and he was compliant (mostly because he felt awful). It did bring the fever down some, but not enough and eventually I did have to take him to the ER. He had an IV bag, they ruled out meningitis, and the next day he went home feeling a ton better.

I just wanted to tell you that story so that you would know about the suppositories. When a child keeps throwing up, giving them oral Tylenol won't work, so the suppositories will help. Even though I did have to take him to the hospital, he didn't have any damage because at least I was able to keep the temperature from going higher by using them.
