Sibling Visitors at Good Sam Maternity Ward

I went on the Good Sam website and saw that there are no visitors under age 14 permitted in patient rooms. Is that the case even for siblings of newly born babies?

I have an 18 month old that I would want to see during my post partum stay, but I do not see any info about that specific situation on the site. Anyone else have any info>

What can I do next?

Different hospital, but when I had my 2nd child my first was 21 months old and he was allowed to come see me and the baby. With my 3rd child, I had her this last January and my boys were not allowed to come see us, but only due to it being flu season... That was their only concern, was the health of the baby. Just like we could only have 2 visitors in the room at a time, my husband counted as 1.

More and more hospitals are doing this... in large part because more and more people aren't getting their kids vaccinated. My friend's Hosp. is currently debating big time as to whether or not to allow children to visit in the maternity ward, NICU, PICU, & pediatric patient rooms. Measles in particular has been having outbreaks all over the country the past couple years, and measles is usually deadly for infants... but all of the deadly diseases are starting to resurface.

To find out Sam's ACTUAL policies... call up the maternity ward and ask.

As a nurse, I can tell you that during the cold and flu season EVERY hospital made some serious restrictions due to the increased incidence of H1N1 and the seasonal flu. We too didn't allow any visitors in the maternity ward under 14 and only parents were allowed into the NICU. Most hospitals have lifted the restricted visitor policy due to no recent reported cases. I would double check with your hospital to see if theirs is still in affect.

Congratulations on your soon to be here arrival! :)

Hi D.,

8 years ago when I had my son at Good Sam, by 10 y/o daughter was able to visit me. Not only did she visit, she was allowed to stay for the birth.

I believe the rules are still the same.

Congratulations and God bless.

I had both of my kids at Good Sam. When my youngest was born 19 months ago, siblings were allowed to come visit as long as they were well. Things might have changed since the H1N1 scare. You can call the hospital and verify if they have changed their policy. Congrats on your new addition....I LOVED delivering at Good Sam~they were the BEST!!!

This might be a policy change as I have had friends have babies there and only sibilings can visit...same at Edwards and CDH. Call the hospital and ask, I'm sure they wouldn't mind clarifying. Good luck and congrats on new baby!

Best thing to do is call and ask. Most hospitals are banning all children from visiting right now due to the H1N1 virus and it's risks. I hope they have lifted this since I know how special it was to have my oldest (13 months at the time) come visit my youngest and I in the hospital, but this was 2.5 years ago.
Good luck with the birth!

I had my son on june 29,2009 and all six siblings came to see him at the same time. They were very sweet about it and not mean at all. I dont think it will be a problem hope it helps!

You should call and ask but I have seen siblings under age 14 come and visit.
If you have not hired a doula I strongly recommend it! Check out peninsuladoulacollective.com
They are very affordable and extensively trained for hospital births.
Good luck and congratulations on your pregnancy!

Not sure about that specific hospitals but I know for John Muir and Kaiser this applies to siblings as well. I am in the same scenario, it is disappointing but I recognize the purpose.

Wishing you a smooth delivery,

That rule was and is in effect at the hospital I just gave birth at. It was to only be in effect during flu and cold season but there are different rules for siblings of newborns.

Hi D.. My son was born at Good Sam in SJ almost 2 years ago and during the tour they gave us they said that siblings can come during visitor hours post-partum with an adult as long as they weren't sick. If they came during the birth it could only be one sibling and one adult since the policy was up to 2 people allowed in the room during the birth.

I would call and ask them. In the past year, many hospitals have started banning visitors under 14 years of age due to H1N1.

At Good Sam in cincinnati recently lifted its visitor restrictions (like in the last week) everywhere except the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) from my understanding. You SHOULD be ok...but give them a call to find out for sure.
