My friend just had her baby early at (33 week) and he is fine. However her shower is coming up and I wanted to see what everyone thought was the must have shower gift for new moms. My children are older so I was not sure if there are new products out there that you would reccommend. Your help is really appreciated!

I second the Moby Wrap. I love mine and wish I had when my daughter was first born. I got mine when she was around 3 month and still use it now that she's 13 months. Love it!

I love to see those mom's carrying their babies in that over the shoulder cradle thing. I don't know what they are called, but they look cool. I always wanted one. I have seen mother's nursing while they are in there. Always looked easier than trying to cover up and nurse in public. This just allows you to do it while the baby is in the carrier.

Okay, I am really not a selfish person, but my FAVORITE gift that was given to me for a baby present was a gift certificate to a salon. I thought it was the most thoughtful present my friend gave (she knew how stressed I was about my son being 6 1/2 weeks early...with having to go to hospital several times a day to nurse and pump). I think most of us agree that we get so many wonderful presents, but how many for the mom? I was floored!

If you give a present for the baby, just be sure to include a gift receipt.

I'm sure she will like whatever comes from your heart.

One of the most useful items was a bouncer seat. You can buy one for about $25-30.

The last gift I gave was of stuff that I have found are used everyday... I get her a pack of diapers (Stage 1 - Newborns are grown out of so fast), baby bath (I love the lavender), q-tips (to keep the belly button cleaned out), diaper crean, vasiline (can be use on rash or helps his peepee from sticking to diapers), wipes, wash clothes, a bottle, nuks, some nice smelling bath stuff for mommy, and a gift card (altought it was only for $10 for the dollar tree).

With my last all I asked for was the diapers, wipes, baby laundry soap & baby bath... the everyday stuff. Right after you have them you don't want to be running out to get it, so if you have a lot of it, it helps to make it easy. Plus, it cost so much to keep that stuff in the house.

The registary thing is also a good idea... I never had one myself. But gift cards can also be helpful.

Infant stimulation is critical for building baby's brains. This can be accomplished with sensory-rich playthings. I recommend you visit my Discovery Toys website (www.junithstoys.com) to see a collection of outstanding educational playthings organized by age. These products are unconditionally guaranteed for life and are generally not available through retail sources. I'd be happy to answer questions about any of the items.

THe gift that I received as a first time mom that was the best and most used was our Fisher Price Booster Seat. THe trays are removable and dish washer safe. I have given that as a gift to several first time moms and it was well received.

That eing said, the thing I use more then anything and I wished I'd had it with my first DD is my Ergo Baby Carrier. They are a little pricy, but I have definitely gotten my money's worth. It is a soft backpack style carrier. It is very versatile-you can wear baby on front, your back or on your hip. It is very comfortable to wear for long periods of time, I'v logged lots of hours shopping with it :)
Good luck to your friend.

First, ask if she has a registry. That can clue you in to what she really needs, so she doesn't end up with 20 blankets or 20 stuffed animals. I agree with the pp about diapers and wipes. Those are pricey and extras of those will definitely be appreciated.

I like to get Moms first aid supplies. It is not an exciting gift, but the best present a Mom will have gotten when the baby wakes up in the middle of the night sick for the first time.

I love the Exergen Temporal Arterial Scanner thermometer with my babies, much easier then taking a rectal temp on an already unhappy baby. Infant tylenol, mylecon, boudreux's butt paste, are also great things.

Other than those, I always check the Mom's registry. It is bound to be full of great ideas.

First time moms need all the equipment. Not sure if she has a registry yet, which makes it so much easier for buying the bigger gift items. When my first was born, I recieved so many items for when he was older....but must haves for the first few months of life, where I was not able to get out and about with a newborn were far and few between.

So what I would have loved to get....DIAPERS depending on what size he is...a preemie may be in newborn diapers for a little longer, wipes, onsies, pj's. Items that will make Mom and Dads life easier while not having to go out. Bathtub for baby, washclothes, diaper cloths for burping, spit up. You can get a lot of these items and put them in a laundry basket for her, for the price of one big item.

Just a thought and congrats to your friends baby.

The BEST gift I received was a three way touch lamp! We were able to turn the light on and off without making any noise or any extra light that would wake our daughter up more than she was already. Now, she is 15 months old and LOVES to turn the light on and off herself (and seems to think that all lamps should be touch lamps). I beleive she got it at Pottery Barn Kids.
As for a smaller gift, we loved our sleep sacs.

The best gifts I got were gift cards. I got enough combined to cover the cost of my breastpump, which was one of of the big ticket items that I had not bought before the birth.

One of my kids favorite gifts they received as a baby (but wasn't used until later) was a step stool with their name that had removable letters (like a puzzle). I want to say personalcreations.com has them. Do not give them stuffed animals. We have so many I don't know what to do with and they just sit in a basket in their room. Maybe one day they will play with them. Also, maybe a gift certificate to a restaurant for her and her husband/significant other and offer to watch the baby if you are a close enough friend and comfortable doing so.

I got a Bumbo baby seat for when the baby is old enough to hold head up, but not old enough to sit on their own. It is awesome!
Also, I LOVE Kiddopotamus swaddling blankets, the ones with velcro, SO much easier than trying to swaddle with a normal swaddling blanket.
And the Kiddopotamus piddle pad that goes in the car seat for those diaper blowouts was great too.
