So every week my daughter (1st grade) does a show and tell oral presentation that she gets graded on. This weeks subject is to look for signs of fall. I will let her come up with her own ideas, but any suggestions for a creative visual? I'm guessing every student will bring in leaves...or drawings of fall. I'm trying to think of something she could do to stand out. Can anyone think of something?
Thanks! I just want to make it clear I do let her come up with her own ideas. :) She ended up making a booklet titled signs of fall. She drew pictures, used real leaves and will take a real walnut we found on a walk. Thanks for the ideas!
Why have her stand out....could you imagine being the 26th kid with a leaf talking about the signs of fall.....boring. :) They all have the same topic. Anyway, she is in the first five to present. They do about 4-5 students a day.
Is there a nearby farmer's market you could bring her to? A hay maze? A pumpkin patch? A tree lined drive where the colors are changing?
Where ever you bring her, bring a camera (because she might not be able to keep or take the signs of Fall she finds). And let HER find them...don't point out things or guide her too much. This is supposed to be a project based on what she sees and thinks (even if it's not what you'd do).
Go out and take a walk with her. Don't do the work for her. Teach her to observe. What is happening with the animals in your neighborhood and yard? What behaviors are they engaging in as a result of the change in seasons? What about other plants - not just trees with changing leaves? What things are blooming at this time of year, not just dying? Some people have gardens with big sunflowers - what has happened to those big flowers now, and what will become of their seeds? How do the plants in your northern climate prepare for shorter days and hard winters? What are farmers and gardeners doing at this time of year? Stop by a farm stand or interactive garden center to see what's happening. I bet she'll come up with something on her own if you just give her some exposure.

Use other harvest-type visuals, such as acorns, squash, fall-flowering plants (asters and mums), red berries from shrubs or vines (skip the poison ivy berries!), apples, etc. Heck, buy a gallon of cider and some little paper cups. That'll be three senses covered! Good luck.
She could do a compare/contrast of things from just a month ago like changes in trees, plants, flowers, weather, clothing, seasonal foods, routines. She could do a collage on a venn diagram (take photographs, cut out magazine pictures or use actual items) or T chart with the differences. Hope this helps!

Weather patterns? Sorry, not very creative this a.m.
What are the signs of fall in your own home? Observe with her and brainstorm: thicker blankets on the bed, decorations change on the wall, shopping for school clothes, trying on last year's winter coat to see if it will fit, switching to heat instead of AC. As someone else suggested, walk outside and look. The idea is to teach them to observe and report on it, not to have the most imaginative thing. Also, after everyone brings stuff in, they usually use the same topic for math: how many leaves were brought, how many halloween candies, making charts and beginning to think about fractions (half the class brought leaves), etc. My kids did the same, and it is also about becoming comfortable speaking up in class. In 1st grade the show and tell was during snack time, so all they had to do was stand up and say 1 or 2 sentences about their thing and then 3 kids could each ask 1 question as chosen by the presenter. Make it fun, and let her choose.

corn that has been dried (the kind they make popcorn out of) but i want to give you a warning here. you need to let her pick and do her own. if you are giving suggestions she will get to the point where she thinks she can't think of her own. or that her own will not be good enough. in first grade she needs to pick and choose her own show and tell. if your doing it for her you will be doing her college essays some day. just something to think about. if most of the kids will be bringing in leaves and thats what your daughter wants to bring then thats ok
She could bring in a scary scarecrow. Bet that would get their attention! LOL
