Shouldn't He Be Crawling?

My baby boy is 8 months 3 weeks. I know every baby achieves milestones at their own time, but i'm still worried! He's close to crawling, but still mostly just sits up and will go on to his tummy, put his butt up in the air and that's it. I read monthly updates about babies progression and they talk about babies this age being able to hold themselves up standing with the help of furniture, etc. He is not doing this at all. We see the ped soon for his 9 month check-up, just wondering what other mamas have experienced with their little ones. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Crawling is not considered a milestone because not every child crawls. The important thing is that he has some wayto get from point a to b by 10 months old. It doesn't matter if it's crawling, scooting, rolling, cruising, walking etc

If memory serves, my DD started crawling close to 6-7 months.
My son-he was 8 months.

He has been slower to do everything than she...but he is way more of a trouble maker. Climbs on everything, throws, throws things in the toilet...

I wouldn't worry just yet. :)

Mine started crawling around 9 months and I was worried at the time too. What really got him going is interesting. We were moving into a new place and were remodeling. So, I put him in a play yard to play with toys so he wouldn't get dirty while we were working. Anyways, he started sitting up more and trying to stand. In about 2 days he learned to stand and hold onto the side. Within 4 days he was walking around the edges. Seriously, he didn't crawl but pulled himself up and walked. He started doing cruising around furniture for a month and in that month learned to crawl, but continuously chose the cruising over the crawling. He started walking and getting up and walking without furniture the week before he turned one.
Now, he is three and is fine! So, maybe you have a walker?

My daughter didn't crawl until 9 months and my niece (now 11 and the most athletic person I know) never crawled at all. He will get there! It's so hard not to worry when its your first child!

Mine daughter didn't crawl an inch until 10 months. Enjoy the immobile phase while you can!! Before you know it, you'll never get to sit down again. Your kid is fine!

My first crawled on target for his age.

My second didnt try until he was almost one...He didnt crawl very long after that though.

My third started walking at 8 months on the dot. He didnt crawl very long. Maybe a week.

You little one is still ok. If he is making movement in the right direction on crawling you should have nothing to worry about.

Your Pedi will probably tell you to watch it and look for other signs of delay..Like babbling and other milestones that are a little bit more solid on when they are suppose to happen.

Does he make any effort to get to anything outside of his reach? Be it scooting, rolling, squirming, sitting up and lunging or other methods of loco motion. My 2 boys crawled early and quickly, they were both walking by 10 months. But my daughter just didn't want to. She never really did the traditional crawl before going on to standing, crusing and walking. She wasn't walking on her own until some time after her first birthday. But she did find a way to get around and get to what she wanted. This was the important part to our ped. She said it wasn't important that she did the classic crawl but that she at least wanted to get somewhere and found a way to get there, whatever that may be. There is a range of "normal" ages for babies to develop skills. 6 months for crawling is only an average, it is not a finite

No, he shouldn't be crawling. Some do at that age. I only had one that did, and all of mine were late walkers. They figure out other ways to get around. You can encourage him to by putting him on all fours. There are a lot of benefits to doing it like strengthening shoulders for writing, etc., but he's way too young for you to be worried about it. Just play with him and encourage playing on his tummy and he'll be fine. If you are seeing other signs for concern, then it's definitely something you want to bring up, but unless it's changed recently, crawling is not even considered a major milestone by pediatricians since so many babies don't.

My ex-roommate's baby started crawling at 11 months... She would roll around to wherever she wanted to be! lol. She started walking around 13 months too, so don't think that just because your son is walking 'late' (and I wouldn't even consider this late, the "normal" range is soo huge, because every baby is different) that everything he does will be late. :)

Mine didn't crawl until 10 months or so, and even then it was the wounded soldier crawl. She's 16 months old and just starting to walk with support. Kids are different. Some, like mine, and maybe yours, are just laid back and not in any terrible hurry to get where they're going.

I've seen a lot of babies wait until 8-9 months to do something that looks a bit like a crawl. But then a few weeks later they are walking like crazy. Some children are much more about pulling themselves up or they just like to play with their toys more. He'll be pulling up before you know it. I'm sure he's fine. You may just be blessed with a relaxed little guy.

He is fine ; ) Some babies actually never crawl, seriously! My youngest scooted, dragged a leg behind him and just used one to move along, some put their bottoms in the air and move forwards or backwards on their hands and toes, or move along like little Marines on their belly, or arch their backs like snakes and propel themselves forwards or backward, or simply roll to where they want to get. There are so many variations of the ways they can get to where they want to go, all normal.

The best thing you can do is put toys or blankets in places a few feet away from him to encourage him to move. Talk to your ped for reassurance : )

Now, I have two delayed kids in the motor skills area, so I am not a good resource ha! BUT I think that they have up to 12 months to crawl on all 4's to still be considered in the normal range. My daugter who just turned a year started army crawling at 8 months but just now started to crawl on all 4's and has only been pulling to stand for a couple of months. I think you boy is just fine. We have some friends that have a one year old and we have not seen him since he was 9 months old but he was not crawling yet but I could tell he would figure it out soon enough. Good luck! He sounds fine to me! (My sons physical therapist used to put a kitchen towel under my son when he was on all 4's to give him some support that way he would get the motions down at least, you could try that)

Do you help him to learn how to crawl? I used to lay on the floor with my kids, and tuck their legs under their bellies and then try to get them to crawl towards me. It is true, all kids do things at different times. My kids walked at 14 months, both of them, and I worried about that too since most kids in my family were walking before one year. Just make sure the Ped. thinks he's ok and if he is, stop worrying.

My first child started crawling at 7 months and was walking at 10 months. My second didn't start crawling till she was 10 months old and didn't walk till right after she turned a year old. Every child is different so no need to worry :)

my baby is the exact same age, and not doing this either yet...they grow at their own pace, don't be worried unless he was obviously behind, but this is still normal, some are just slower than others
