My son saw an ENT today, who recommended that he get Allergy testing done. (He is also getting tubes put in his ears in a few weeks). Has anyone else had their 2 year old tested for allergies? Isn't this a little young? The ENT said it was a little young, but it could be a big help for him. Any thoughts?

What can I do next?

I have a friend who had her almost two year old tested when she had a bad reaction to some peanut butter she ate. They also tested her for some very common allergians and found she may also have an allergy to cats, and she is allergic to peanuts. From what she described it wasn't a big deal or traumatic for her daughter in anyway.

My daughter was tested at 13months... she's allergic to peanuts.

I had both my children tested at a year old. My oldest is allergic to Peanuts and any type of animal with hair. My youngest is fine. It does not hurt to know. Make sure they draw the blood and not stick him with lots of needles. Good luck.

Most doctors will not do this type of testing until the child is at least 6 years old because most times they are very inaccurate. You might want to consider a naturopathic doctor.

A couple of my friends have recently had their 11 month olds tested. It just might be incomplete results until they are like 5 years old or so.

K.,
Is your son having allergy problems with air allergies or something physical like food? If it's just air allergies, your pediatrician can prescribe something like Zyrtec. If it's something like a food allergy, they would just tell you to not give it to him. My son had air allergies and they prescribed Zyrtec. I've had it done and they sort of poke you with what feels like little needles. Their bodies change so much that it probably wouldn't be a help to your son. My son only had the problem for only a few months. If it's just like what I described, I would ask the pediatrician for a prescription. That did work for my son. Good luck and I hope he feels better.

I did take my 2 year old for allergy testing, because he has asthma and they were checking to see if some allergy triggers could be making it worse. We also have a family history of allergies. He didn't show any signs of allergies. The specialist we took him too said that it is typical to not test positive to things at this age unless the allergies are severe. He also said that if he were tested again at a later date, he may test positive at that time. So I suppose it is kind of a judgement call on your part.

However, if they do find that he has allergies, they may be able to suggest some type of medication that may help the situation with his ears.

I had allergy testing myself while I was in high school and did 3 years of shots for my allergies. I have noticed a marked improvement in my symptoms.

Good luck with whatever you end up doing! Let me know if I can be of more help. :)

My son is 18 months old. For over a year now he gets a cold everytime we go outside when the weather is nice. This cold also seems to trigger asthma. After dealing with this for 1 year, my son's pediatrician has finally decided that maybe he has allergies that are causing what appears as cold symptoms and triggers his asthma. They have given him medicine to take through the allergy season and then they are going to send him to see an allergist if he responds to the medicine. I couldn't be happier about this. I'm so sick of dealing with this. I hate that he has to go through this. He is miserable. He loves going outside and he is too young to understand that he will get sick if he does. He doesn't sleep good because he can't breath. He is tired and lethargic all the time. You should be glad they are going to do something about it. The allergy test itself may be a little uncomfortable for a few minutes but if it makes him better it will be best in the long run. I wish the same for my son. Good luck to you!

I go on Wednesday to an ENT. My pediatrician has suggested we have allergy tests done. My son just turned 2 and I've been waiting until he was 2 to see an ENT. My son has had pneumonia 3 times since the fall and it looks like it's seasonal allergies that could be causing him to get very congested.

I have three girls who all have asthma, with my first daughter I waited per peds. advice and regret that I did, when I had my second and third(twins) as soon as symptoms started, I took them to my asthma/allergy spec. and let him make the call. I don't know your location, Dr. Rand Dankner is exellent. ###-###-#### is his St. Peters office, he also has one in Chesterfield, they can give you the number. If you trust your specialist(I really did and still do) give him all the info. the ent gave you and let him make the call. Good Luck.

I took my son when he was two, he had all types of problems, with the runny nose, sneezing constantly, stuffed, seemed sick all of the time, I figured that he had some sort of allergies. They did the pin-prick test on his back (relatively painless) and it has done wonders for us. I can treat him properly instead of trying to treat him for things that don't exist. Go for it, it will make your life so much better and his as well. If you live anywhere near the Chesterfield area I would suggest taking him to the Allergy Associates, they deal alot with small children and are totally wonderful.

Hi K., we were told that until they are at least 4 it is really hard to diagnose them because they are still developing in so many ways and the tests may be inconclusive. Our 4 year old Son suffered horribly with upper respiratory issues and we were headed for sinus sugery when he was 16 months old until we became more proactive about products we were using in our home around him and on him and started doing more organic food for him as well. I am so thankful for the changes we made because he is like a new child, well and active without any resp. issues at all and almost off the chart with height! Blessings, J.
