Went to the Dr on Monday because my daughter was complaining of sore throat and she had a sudden fever...Dr said it wasn't strep, but her throat was a little red...Well yesterday she threw up and she had a fever all day and then all night she did not have one. She also says her throat no longer hurts but now her belly hurts and she had a round of diarrhea this morning. The fever is back but it is low grade (100.5) Not sure if this is viral and it will run its course? Not sure if its a UTI? But hubby says its not a UTI or she would be hurting when she pees? Thanks for your responses.

Whitney- Not just girls can get Urinary Tract infections, boys/men/women can get them, too. So whats the fuss about? Generally, for most people when they get a UTI it burns or stings when they urinate.

What can I do next?

There is a virus that goes around in the warm months..summer and early fall. I can't remember what it's called? It causes these exact same symptoms. My son has had it a few times. Usually we develop an immunity to it as children and don't get it as adults. It causes a very sore throat (even lesions on the throat), fever and nausea/vomiting/diarrhea (usually that part only lasts less than a day). I'm no doctor, but I do also know that many strep tests have false negatives. I would say wait a day, and if the fever/tummy troubles persist tommorrow then take her in. Strep absolutely causes vomiting, but I don't think it causes diarrhea?

when in doubt take her in!!! my doc always says she would rather we go in 100 times with nothing wrong then not go in once and there be something wrong. better safe than sorry.

Not all UTIs hurt upon urination.
Yes Call Doctor and ask him viral vs bacterial.

Did he put her on antibiotics at the last visit?

Lots of fluids Mom, Tylonal or motrin for the fever . Watch the diarrhea if it is 5 or more bouts of it again call the doctors and watch for dehydration.

Good luck, Keep us posted please!

UTIs don't normally cause diarrhea.

I would take her back in and have her checked out - have a blood test ran as well as a stool and urine sample...

you are your child's advocate. if your mommy gut is saying something is wrong - then something is.

You don't necessarily need to take her in to see the doctor, but it might be a good idea to call. At our doctor's office a receptionist takes down some information and has one of the nurses call me back. The nurse then asks me a ton of questions to help me determine whether or not my child needs to be seen. Sometimes she'll need to ask the doctor a question or two and will need to call me back. There have been one or two times when the doctor said she would like to see my child, but usually talking to the nurse will give me enough information to take care of him at home.

Call the doctor. I really think you'll feel better about everything once you've talked to the nurse.

Call the Dr and make an appt. I have consistent UTI's and they never hurt when I urinate. I rarely know I have them until they infect my ureters or Kidneys....but I also have IC. anyway - it doesn't HAVE to hurt when she urinates for it to be a UTI.

Did the DR swab her? could still be strep. could be viral. I'd take her back.

Btw, no offense but unless ur DH is a Dr, what the heck does he know about female urinary systems since he's never been one? (yes I'm a bit touchy on the matter...)

Hmm, I would call the doctor.. I wonder if the sore throat was one thing, but now it is something else..

It reminds me of when my best friend had appendicitis, she had not slept well for a few weeks before and had seemed like she was coming down with a cold.. 2 weeks later.. Yikes.. surgery..

Look into her throat with a flashlight. If it's red with white spots, it's strept throat.

It's very likely a virus since she has diarrhea and a low grade fever. Her belly hurts because she has diarrhea plus she threw up. So yes, virus. That means her body has to just work it out. Since she's not puking any more and is having diarrhea instead I would make sure that she's taking in fluids. Soup, water, Gatorade... just give her clear liquids and maybe some crackers. Take it easy on her stomach and don't worry about food. Just keep her hydrated or you'll be over-taxing her stomach and digestive system. It should pass within a couple of days.

Call and see what the doctor says. At the beginning of the summer my oldest had roseola. He had a fever (it would come down then spike up) upset stomach, mild diarrhea, sore throat it lasted about a week and once the fever broke he broke out in a rash which caused another trip to the doctor.
