Hi Ladies...
So here's my delema... i've potty trained my almost 3 year old, he was ready, waking up dry from his nap for like six months... i was dreading it, but it was easier then i thought, because he was ready... right away, peepeed and poopood in the potty, few accidents the first week, but other then that, really good... for the first month, he was wearing a pull up to bed overnight, but would wake up dry, and wake me up at night sometimes to go peepee... so we decided to take off the pull up and just do underware around the clock, day and night... and its been great, for about a month or so... for the last 2 nights, he's wet his bed... first night bed, second night body pillow next to his bed... may be he was tired and just fell asleep really havily, i'm not sure... what should i do? should i put the pull up back on him at night??? should i not??? i dont wanna clean his matress every morning, but i also dont want to take a step backwards...
what do i do???

Hi there-
I used the "big girl" (in my case) underwear as the incentive and had my daughter go back to the thick cotton training paints when she had an accident. I didn't use pull ups once because I felt that just gives them an out if they are too tired to get up. There are so many different varieties of toddler underwear out now there should be something you could entice him with.

It's okay for at night... even older kids still have accidents at night.. sometimes they are just sleeping so solidly that they don't realize. Once my daughter, who is 5 yrs., pee'd in the bed... and she didn't realize... she said she was having a "dream" that she was pee'ing but didn't realize it was "real" and then when she felt wet, THEN it woke her up. LOL.

I still use waterproof bed pads under my girl, just in case. It's good to get several as back-ups and just change them out, launder, etc.

MANY kids this age and older, still use some sort of night-time diaper...it's not unusual. Sometimes they are just so tired, they can't wake up. Think about us adults.... we have a hard time waking up in the middle of the night too... whether for them or for us to go to the bathroom. LOL.

Accidents are going to happen. There will be these moments. If it happens with my girl, we just clean it up, she puts on new pajamas, I put a new bed pad under her, we don't scold. It's just an accident.... versus a "step backwards."

I think your son is fine.

I'm right where you are. but sometimes for some reason you do get accidents. it may have been because he was really tired, or even growth spurts or something else can change their habits.

on nights where i know the risks are high i've put on a pull up or diaper on to avoid having to clean up. i don't know if it's the best thing to do, but i really don't want to have to clean it up. and if he's gonna go in the middle of the night without waking up, he'll go in the bed or the pull-up. so i figure, it can't hurt if it's not gonna change the behavior.

i did do it once she was asleep so that she wouldn't realize in the morning that one was on her and just go in the pull-up.

its just something thats normal. if you do put a pull up on him remember to explain that he still needs to go potty in the toilet. what we did with my nephew when he did the same thing was we woke him up before we went to bed (at like 10-11p) and took him to the restroom. that helped with us. good luck i hope this passes soon!

I have two little boys, one just turned 4 and the other one will be three in a few weeks. Anyway, both are potty trained and wear undies all day and during nap, but since we had many night time accidents I just put a pullup on them both every night. Who really has time for all that laundry :) I was told by the boy's ped that it is normal for boys to take a bit longer with nighttime dryness and that this is perfectly normal. You will get other advice about nightime traning I am sure, but I wanted to put my two cents in. I think its easier on all (parents and kids) to let nature take its course with this one then to try to force an immuture bladder to hold it all night! Or worse yet wakinig you and your son every few hours to see if he has to go potty, then you might have a dry son in the morning but you also are going to have a sleep deprived son (and mom)!! It really depends on you and what is best for your family. Good luck with all the other advice you will receive and heres to finding a solution that will work! :) :) :)

I would not put the pull up on, wearing a pull up will give him security go in it. I have a 2 1/2 year old little girl in my daycare she has been trained she was 2, but her mom and dad would put pull ups on her at night, and every morning she would be wet, well she is staying her with my family the whole month of August, and so far she has been dry every morning, I'm not using the pull ups, it can't be OK to pee or poop on yourself at sometimes and not OK at other times, all's that does is confuse them. I would limit liquids after 6:00 p.m. Have him go potty right before bed, too.
You can buy a waterproof matress cover at Target, Wal Mart, etc.
If you do decide to put him in a diaper at night, that would be O.K. too. DON'T put him back in a diaper during the day, though. Good luck! :)

H.,

I was told by my pediatrican not to put a pullup on them and just do the underwear. If you put a pullup on them then you are telling them it's ok to go potty in it. They think it's kind of like a diaper. I would just limit liquids in the evening. I don't let my 3 1/2 year old son drink much after dinner. A few sips of water if he is really thirsty. That has helped us a lot. He will eventually get the idea if he wets the bed a few more times and he will realize he doesn't like being wet. I also make sure that once my son wakes that I go in his room and put him on the potty right away. Good luck.

Yes! Put the pull up back on at night/naps. Daytime potty training and night time are not the same. Most kids are not night trained until 5-7 years of age. My daughter is almost 6 and still wears pull ups at night.
