Should I Have Got the Other IUD

I had my son 7 months ago and about a month later I got my hormone free IUD. I was affraid of the side affects I would get if I was on the hormone IUD, so I just went with the other. I never really took birth control before but I did try the patch and gained 4 pounds in one week, so I got off. I am really bad with taking pills even if its my vitamins, so didnt want to try that eighter. I finally got my period when my son was around 3 months it lasted 2 really heavy weeks. I know it was going to be heavy the doc warned me. Im normally really light when it comes to my period. It only last a few days.

My concern is I finally got my second period on oct 23 and it's now nov 27 and still on my period. I have went through so many boxes of tampons and pads. I actually have to wear a tampon and a pad because it is so heavy it will leak after a while. A week or two ago I thought I was almost off because I was bleeding lightly but then a few days later it started heavy again. I know its supost to be heavy but dang, this heavy?

What can I do next?

Please see your doc. A whole month of bleeding could be something completely unrelated to the IUD, and if you don't call or go in, they won't know for sure.
You are probably at least borderline anemic, as well, which means fatigue and easy to bruise, you may need to supplement with iron.
You'll never know if you don't go!

I don't know if you should have chosen the other IUD (I had the Mirena put in) but I would call your OB. That just sounds like too much bleeding to me. I'm 9 1/2 months post partum now and still haven't had a period and my son weaned 3 weeks ago!

Hi E.,
I have the copper IUD, too. I had it put in over a year ago-and while it isn't my favrite thing, it's the most preferrable method to me as I won't ever use artificial hormones again.
My periods are very heavy now, and last about 9 days (I had one last 11). CALL YOUR DOC!! This bleeding is not OK, and needs to be checked-there may be an issue with the IUD, or it could be something unrelated-but you need to at least talk to someone. You may already be anemic from bleeding for so long (I know I start feeling super exhausted around day 6), so make sure you're getting plenty of iron (red meat, leafy greens, even cooking in cast iron) and fluids.

Please call your doctor. You should be seen ASAP. There could be something wrong, possibly something wrong with the iud insertion. You don't have any pain do you? Irregardless, please call your doctor. I too have a copper IUD but I have not had any bleeding yet. I've had mine for about 5 months and am still breast feeding so no periods yet.
Good luck. Let us know what happened.
