Should I Be Concerned?

My 20 month old is acting odd. He has been obsessively asking for drinks. Yesterday between him and my 2 others sons we went through almost 2 gallons of sugar free drinks! And he drank most of it. He would have an extremely, sopping wet diaper every hour and almost as soon as I would change him it would be wet again. Should I worry about diabetes? I have a family history of type 2 diabetes. My kids have been inside this last week because it was so hot outside. So, I know it's not heat related. How diligent do I need to be in getting him an appointment with the Dr.? Is this an emergency? Am I being paranoid? Does anyone have any suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your words of encouragement. I wanted to give you an update. I took my son to the Dr. for his well check and immunizations. While there, I explained about the drinking and big wet diapers. She asked about family history and I explained there was a lot of type 2 diabetes, and I even learned about 3 cousins with juvenile diabetes. With that, she sent us to do a fasting blood sugar test. I got the results back yesterday and everything is normal. Guess he was just thirsty or really loving the cyrstal light. At least, I hope so :) Thank you everyone.

I am a SAHM of three. After eight years of parenting I have seen a lot and learned a lot. Nutrition information usually changes every year. Balancing diets, etc. But one thing that will NEVER change is how important it is to include dairy in your diet, especially as a child. Water is very important too! I give juice to my children, but only a cup at a time, sometimes daily. If we are active and outside I stick to water. Just because something is Sugar Free doesn't mean it is the healthiest option for them. I too buy SF Koolaid in the hopes that one day we won't find out that Splenda is "bad for you." Even though most juice drinks are healthy, they do contain a lot of sugars, both natural and added, so be careful in how many times you are refilling those sippie cups! One option that has worked for me in giving the kids water, especially when they were little, is to serve it with fun ice cubes, and in a fun cup with a straw. Just my advice. If your child(ren) are still demanding drinks constantly, it could be medical(thyroid),maybe not. Just talk to thier doctor and keep an eye on thier behavior. Also, kids don't need caffiene. And no matter what you hear, sugar makes them hyper too! Not just caffiene. Ask your doctor. -ML

R.,
In my opinion, if you are concerned you should see a doctor. I would write everything down including how much and what he is drinking, the number of wet diapers, how long this behavior has been going on as well as any other symptoms if any. Call the pediatrician first thing in the morning and they will usually see you the same day if you express your concern. It is better to be safe than sorry. If nothing else, you can call and talk to the pediatricians nurse for advice.

Hi R.,
how about trying a finger prick test. I had a scare with my daughter and had the finger prick thingy to do it on her at home and it was so much more less tramatic (sp?) to her. We did one early morning, after fasting all night,& 1 before and after meals. It checked sugar levels and gave us an idea if we needed to do more testing with the dr. I had the glucometer (sp?) from when I was Pregn. Maybe you could find a family memebr.or friend with one. Hope this helps somewhat. Goodluck S.

R.,

I would not worry too much. There is a family history of diabeties in my family too. I have been over sensitive to the symptoms (worry at each small thing that could be a signal). I would say watch him the next several days. Maybe he has been getting "juice" everytime he asks so it has become a habit. Try offering water....if he is really that thirsty he will drink that as much as the "juice". But, no matter what you have to go with your instincts. If you think he needs to be seen then by all means go with that and call your doctor. Good luck. I hope and pray that he has just been extra thirsty. C.

I don't know if this is an emergency situation but it sounds like you should definitely call the Dr. office and tell them the situation and see what they say about it. It definitely raises some flags since the Diabetes runs in your family and it's always better to be safe than sorry. Good Luck on this and keep me posted.
