Should I Be Concerned? - Gurnee,IL

I have been taking Yaz since May. I have had my periods regularly & even spotted in between for some months. I am not nursing either. This month will be the 2nd month that I have not gotten my period. I am not pregnant & I chalked up last month's missed period to stress as it happens once in awhile. I have communicated with my doctor & he says Yaz is a low dose estrogen pill & it's just b/c my uterine lining is very thin, thus not shedding any lining=no period. He doesn't seem concerned, but suggested if I'd like to switch to Yasmin since it has more estrogen. To me, having my period means that my body is working the way it should (unless pregnant or specifically taking birth control to avoid periods) & not having it makes me uneasy. Should I be concerned? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you!

I know having your period is reassurance that things are working correctly, but don't forget, things actually *aren't* working correctly when you're on the pill. When you take the 1-week break from the active pills you're actually artificially causing your period. The people who first invented birth control pills actually thought that women would "miss" having their periods every month (ha ha) - plus it would be reassurance that they weren't pregnant - which is why they designed the pill to have the break every month. I guess my point is that missing a pill period probably doesn't mean much because your system is not operating normally on the pill in the first place. If it bothers you, though, then switch by all means.

There is no medical reason to have a period. If you don't have one, nothing bad will happen. It's just your bodies way of getting rid of the unfertilized egg and lining. If there is no lining or egg, no reason to have a period. I wouldn't worry too much. I regularly skip a month or two. I would listen to your doc and be glad that AF decided to take some time off.

Just curious if you are breastfeeding F.? I know that this can have an affect on your menstrual cycle and cause missed periods. Your baby is only 7 months so maybe your body is still readjusting. I wouldn't get too concerned, especially if you are breastfeeding as this could likely be the culprit.

I would try to switch pills, but keep in mind your hormones will probably be out of whack for awhile. I don't know what Yaz advertises, but I know most methods make periods seem obsolete. I agree with you that your body should act normally with having a period. I used to get the shot years ago, which caused missed periods and spotting which I hated, because I never knew when it was going to happen, therefore always had to wear liners which was annoying as hell. I've been taking Ortho-tri off and on and like it because I can control my periods and know I will have them, I think it's important to allow your body to shed the lining and act as it is supposed to. All these new methods that are coming out have all these funky side affects and I just stick to the regular old pill, the one that doesn't make me crazy & emotional :)
