Hello again moms for the second time today. I had my son, 9 months old at the pediatrician today for his 9 month well appt. I am a little upset at what they told me. At first they said he needed to get his shots. Then when we got there they said babies dont get shots at 9 months?? they receive them at 12 months?? is this true? when did your baby get their immunizations?? Also, they advised that I take him completely off of juice b/c of obesity in the U.S.A. in children???? What?? This is crazy I have never heard such a thing?? Any advice you can offer or pls advise when you baby had shots & insight on the juice would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

I think I'd probably change pediatricians. Yes, for awhile they were concerned that juice was a contributor to obesity in children, but that's more in older children who are already leaning toward heaviness. My son (19 months) only gets water and milk, sometimes a splash of juice in his water. But I only drink water, so I don't think of giving him anything else. And juice is usually packed with sugar.

Here's a good reference for vax: http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/recs/schedules/child-schedule...

There's usually not a 9 month unless they're catching up on something else.

The reason for the juice "scare" is b/c you get the fiber from the fruit which balances out the sugar of the juice. This is the same for all juices. However, this is not much of a concern for the under 10 crowd, b/c Mom and Dad usually control how much of what they get to eat and drink. As long as Elijah likes the juice, give it to him, just water it down a bit so that he doesn't get the full amount of sugars and acids that are found in all fruit juices.
As far as the shots, my first son had a problem with soo many at one time. I know that it can be more of a pain, but talk to your Dr about spreading the shots out over a period of time, so that he doesn't get more than 2 combined at any given visit. All of the vaccinations can be given in individual shots, so availability is not an issue. You may find that he/she is reluctant to spread out the shots, in which case I would find another pediatrician. This is your child and you are the only that can fight for him and protect him.

I remember my daughter getting at least 1 shot at 9 months. As for juice, I have hear this. My daughter, who will be 2 in July, has never had juice. We give her flavored water and call it juice.

here is a great link for immunization schedules
http://www.edcp.org/html/resched.cfm and
http://www.edcp.org/pdf/Imm_Schedule.pdf
so according to this they don't get them at 9 months. I don't serve my kids or my daycare kids juice except of rare occassions. But mostly because children don't need the juice if they are eating a healthy diet, it can cause more cavities and possibly obesity. I prefer that the children eat real fruit and drink water or milk. . . but at your child's age he would need breastmilk or formula. I wouldn't really give that much water unless he is very active outside, etc.
