Definitely contact the doctor!! If you want a new pediatrician's office, mine is wonderful . . . Dr Gilbert is her name and the number is ###-###-####
It's me again....
My son had some shots about 10 days ago,I think the nurse was new,she seemed a little unprepared and his last shot bleed really bad(down his leg over my hand little puddle on the floor) and she got kinda nervous(I thought it had to do with the blood, but now i'm not so sure),we got home and you could tell his legs were tender as to be expected but one place(the one that bleed so bad) seemed really bruised and swollen. Now 10 days later they have all healed up but that one place is still really swollen(like the size of a large marble under the skin)its still really tender too. I have tried cold packs, warm packs, rubbing it,but he can't stand for me to touch it . He scratches at it. I know it's bothering him. I'm scared maybe the tip of the needle broke off in his leg-is this possible? I just thought i'd get some opnions before I called the doc sounding crazy. He has never had a bad reaction to shots before in fact none of my kids have and he has always seemed so good about them as far as bruising and swelling and fussyness goes. Once again, Thank you ladies I really value your opnion and appreciate your time.~N. J.
Thank you for all your advice!!
He had to see another doc yeasterday(the ENT) and I happened to ask his nurse to check it out right before we left,(since she administers that offices allergy shots),she said that it was ok that the nurse was prolly new and didn't really know what she was doing and was rough and thats what caused the bleeding, that it was highly unlikly the needle broke off unless he jerked his leg against it(he didn't) and even then it would be infected and look alot worse. Just thought i'd let you know he's ok, and the spot is slowly going down and he's messing with it less and even letting me rub it(what the nurse suggested)
Thanks ladies you are all truly a blessing!!

I think you should definitely call the doctor. If it is of concern to you, you are the best one to determine if something is wrong - trust your suspicion.
Blessings,
D.
I would take him in as soon as possible. Its hard to describe over the phone. I would make sure to bring this to the doctors attention so he will know and maybe speak to the nurse so she wont hurt another child. I know she didint do it on purpose but it needs to be addressed. Good luck and hug that baby for me
Hi N.-
If your pediatrician has been in pracice longer than 53 minutes, I assure you you will be neither the first nor last mother to call sounding "crazy". It's your job to be hyper-alert, right?!....and theirs to help you keep your children well. You didn't mention which shot it was that gave your son the bad reaction, but if it was some sort of indicator shot (like a TB skin test or something), any adverse reaction should definately be reported. I would call anyway, personally. It's probably just a bad bruise from a rough shot (poor guy!), but the itching could mean an infection or an allergic reaction. I say call, or even just walk-in on the office and ask for another nurse to look at it. Either way, a good doc and office won't mind- and shouldn't!
Good luck!
If it was me I would definitely call the Doctor, it should not be swollen, for this amount of time and the way you describe the nurse reaction, I would definitely get him and make sure everything is ok, You are not crazy for making the call, I would be very concerned
A little about me I am a 52 year old grandma, and I have two grand children one is 7 and one is 10, and I went to school to become a Medical Assistant Admin, and we had to learn the medical side of thing.
My youngest son's leg was like that also when he got his shots. I don't remember how old he was, even though it seems like he was older than 7 months. He didn't act like it bothered him much for me to touch it and he wasn't scratching it. And it didn't bleed. But it was swollen and felt like a knot, like you described. I called his pediatrician's office and they assured me it would be fine. I even ran into the nurse at the grocery store and I had her look at it and she said it was ok. Although he started crying as soon as he saw her...he remembered her! LOL!
It took a little over 2 weeks before it went away. But to be on the safe side, I would take him in because of the bleeding you described and the way he's always scratching it.
It's probably nothing but better safe than sorry!
I would go back to the doctor's office. Just walk in. I would have someone look at it. Make sure the nurse that gave the shot is not the one looking at it. A different nurse (hopefully a RN and not a nursing assistant)will let you know if you need to see the doctor. I would definately let them know I did not appreciate my child being the guinny pig.
if you think that the nurse messed up and especially if you think that the needle might have broke then you need just to take him in and have them make sure that everything is ok. and if it were me and they did do something wrong, especially if she managed to break the needle (and by her reacation it seems like she might have realized something was wrong) and not done anything about it right then i would tell them that i wasnt gonna pay for them to take care of whatever they did wrong and i would make sure that that nurse never gave my child shots again
btw its probably pretty unlikely that the needle broke off but i wouldnt be any less conserned that somethign was wrong
N., after 10 days, i would definitely call the Dr.'s office & ask about it.... after 3 kids myself, i don't think that's typical... get the dr.'s opinion & put yourself at ease!!
i would definatly call the doctor. it never hurts to ask but if the needle did break in there you don't want to wait to long because of infection. i hope he gets to feeling better soon!!
