Shortness of Breath in Pregnancy

Hey there. Anybody else have lots of shortness of breath in first trimester? I've read that it's "normal" but I've never heard of it and how much is normal? 6wk ulrasound was fine. No other "weird" symptoms except that I haven't had as much morning sickness as I had with my first kid which makes me nervous.

I've found that the shortness of breath is typically mainly or only at night, worst when I'm lying down or sometimes sitting. Why? What did you do to get rid of the shortness of breath and what causes it? Why did I not have it with my other pregnancy but I do with this one?

(I did mention it to my O.B. briefly and he wasn't concerned.)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks, Moms! I did ask my O.B. and he said it was normal just like you guys did. I guess I'll just wait it out! I don't have much nausea this time and I'll take the shortness of breath over the nausea any day! Yea healthy pregnancy!

This is totally normal! I am on my 5th pregnancy and it seems my shortness of breath gets worse each time. The only thing I found that makes a difference is laying on my side rather than my back, I also try to walk a bit each day to help conform your body to the extra blood it has to move through.

Good luck!

I had it with my second too. It was in the first trimester and then a little in the third, but thankfully I carried a little lower the second time around so it wasn't quite as bad at the end. I never found anything to do about it except have the baby, but you have a while to go there. Good luck.

Yep, normal. The body changes and at least for me some underlying stress that I "thought" I had under control.
When I had problems many years ago they first ruled out twins! Thought I had developed asthma and had full pulmonary function tests, normal. Then thought maybe I had a pneumonia and had a chest x-ray at about 10-12 weeks, which of course was fine.
Calm - yoga breathing helps.

Good Luck

I have had the worst morning sickness and even lost weight and still had 8-9 pound babies (5 and number 6 is on the way) do not worry just keep eating healthy snacks all day long and you will be fine. As for shortness you mention it is at night are you very tired at the end of the day with stuff left to do? Are you exercising ? I would ask the doc again if it persists.

I know that when I would lay down flat on my back that I wouldn't be able to breathe very well.. Then later in my pregnancy I started having a wuick heart rate and had to go to the hospital.. The doctor said it was because of the way the baby was laying.. So maybe that's what is going on with you.. But I would definetly check it with your doctor

Normal. I had it too, and my OB suggested I get tested for asthma. Turns out, I didn't have asthma and it was just anxiety issues. It was hard for me to believe that I had anxiety and panic attacks, because I've never been bothered by things and extremely laid back, but hormones can do strange things to our bodies.

This is a little more extreme, but I have cystic fibrosis and in the first and second trimesters I majorly had pain in my right lung (which turned out to be recurring pneumonia, up to 5 times so far and I'm 7 months). They say shortness of breath is more common in the third trimester, and so far it's tough to breathe even now, but it's nothing compared to the 1st and 2nd trimesters for me!
